This little valve decides everything the machine does.
Ty Stewart got a hydraulic spool valve stripped right down on the bench. It looks like nothing, but it is the brain of the whole hydraulic system.
Inside there is an internal drilling that routes the oil, and a spool valve that slides across. Move a function and that spool shifts, blocks one port, opens another, and sends the oil exactly where it needs to go. The rest of the oil just sits there pressurised on standby, waiting until you need it.
Every lift, every movement, every function on the machine comes down to this bit doing its job. Get it wrong and nothing works right.
That is the stuff you learn pulling them apart, not out of a book. Same eye for detail on every heavy diesel and mobile crane repair job across Sydney 🛠

Round two of the diesel brand name challenge, this time with Ash 😂
Ash is holding down the office while Lanna's on mat leave, and she'll tell you herself the trades aren't just a boys club anymore. Plenty of women keeping these businesses running, and she knows her diesel brands better than half the blokes on site.
So we put her on the spot to read out a few. Turns out we Aussies have our own way of saying them.
Here's the kicker. actually commented and told us it's pronounced "HEE-no." Yeah, nah. Out here it's "HIGH-no" and it always will be, sorry team 😅
Respect to HINO for playing along though. These are the names you come across all the time in this game, and after enough years around a heavy diesel mechanic workshop you say them your own way regardless. All part of life on the tools and mobile crane repairs across Sydney 🛠

Ever wondered how those tower cranes actually go up? 👀

Saturday morning, down in the hole jump-starting the generator and across the site they are erecting a tower crane. A Borges 400 tonne crane grabs each section, lifts it up and the crew assemble it piece by piece.
The clever bit is the coordination. Blokes on two-way radios up top talking to the operator down below, guiding it up, down, left, right, in and out, running the pins to lock each section in. Once that section is in, everyone's happy.

No chance you'd get Dom up there though 😅 but this is the kind of gear we know and how we live and breathe as heavy diesel mechanics doing mobile crane repairs across Sydney 🛠

Meet Lana, our operations manager and the brains behind the office at DPR 🙌
And big news, she's officially on maternity leave after welcoming another little boy into the world 💙 congratulations Lana, and welcome to the world Ashton, from all of us.
Before she headed off we grabbed her for a quick interview. Turns out the busiest day is always a Monday, so her survival tip is just chuck a sicky 😂 (she's joking… we think). Her favourite part of the job is knuckling down on the nitty gritty details her OCD loves. She even had a customer ring the ops manager because his oil light came on, so she talked him through checking his own dipstick 😂 not exactly her department mate. Twenty years a tea drinker, now she can't go a day without an iced coffee with caramel syrup. And don't touch her spreadsheets 😂
The office won't be the same without her for a bit. Lana keeps the whole operation running so the team can keep every mobile crane repair and heavy diesel job moving across Sydney 🛠

Not everyone's built for the camera 😅
Katie couldn't get Alfie Millar to commit to an interview, so our apprentice Riley Perham took matters into his own hands and chased him round the workshop asking questions while Alfie hid his face under his jacket 😂
This is the thing about a crew, you get every personality under the sun. Some love the camera, some would genuinely rather run and hide behind a jacket than say two words on film. Both make the team what it is.
Good on ya Alfie, we'll get you one day mate 😂 the camera shy legend behind some of the mobile crane repair and heavy diesel job across Sydney .

Diesel mechanic on his day off 😂
Everyone else sees a construction site. Dom sees a 400 tonne crane going up and can't help himself. Breaking down the sections, the height, why they use that size for the weights, how you can tell it's not even lifting heavy by the falls of rope off the boom.
"I'm not lifting nothing today." Sure mate. The brain never clocks off.
Once this trade's in you it's in you for life. Same eye on the weekend as any other day for a heavy diesel mechanic doing mobile crane repairs across Sydney 🛠

Daddy daughter time hits different when your dad's a diesel mechanic 😂
Other kids get the park. Dom's get a full lecture on how they stack a tower crane 😅 the tagline rope, the blokes up top steadying the sections in, a 400 tonne crawler doing the lift, and why you can tell it's not heavy by the falls of rope coming off the boom.
Reckon they'll know more about cranes than most blokes on site by the time they're ten.

Nothing starts a blue in the workshop like how you pronounce a brand name 😂
We got Tyson to read out a few diesel brands, and let's just say the Aussie version doesn't always match what the Americans, Europeans or Japanese reckon it should be.
Say it wrong on site and you'll never hear the end of it. Say it the Aussie way and you're home 😅
