🌱 World Environment Day

Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.

At the Deakin Hydrogen Hub, we're exploring how research, innovation and collaboration can contribute to a lower-emissions future.

Through applied research and testing, we're helping build the evidence needed to better understand hydrogen's role in Australia's clean-energy transition.

📸✨ Behind the scenes at the Deakin Hydrogen Hub! ✨📸

Yesterday we spent the day capturing new photography for the Deakin Hydrogen Hub, updating our image library and showcasing the amazing people, spaces and capability that make the Hub what it is. 🚛⚡🔬

While the final images will help tell our story, one of the best parts was bringing the whole team together and celebrating the work happening across our facility. From researchers and technical staff to our education and industry engagement spaces, every photo reflects the passion and teamwork behind the Hub. 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬🤝

A big thank you to local photographer Kristian Pechotsch for helping capture the energy, expertise and enthusiasm that drives what we do every day. 📷👏

Behind every polished photo is a team willing to step in front of the camera, share their work and help tell the story of hydrogen innovation in South-West Victoria. 💚🌏

We're excited to start using these images to showcase our research, partnerships and impact, and to give more people a glimpse into what happens here at the Hub.

Thanks to everyone who got involved and helped make the day such a success! 🙌😊

🌿 This National Reconciliation Week, we're reflecting on the connections between place, knowledge and innovation.

The Deakin Hydrogen Hub may be focused on future technologies, but its design is grounded in something much older: the stories, knowledge and landscapes of South-West Victoria.

The Hub was shaped through sustained consultation with Peek Whurrong Elders and emerging leaders, helping create a facility that reflects a deep connection to place.

Design elements throughout the building draw inspiration from traditional eel traps, weaving patterns, and the colours and textures of Country. These influences can be seen in the materials, forms and spaces that bring people together across the Hub.

They remind us that innovation doesn't happen in isolation. It happens in places with long histories, enduring cultural knowledge and continuing connections to Country.

During National Reconciliation Week, and in recognition of this year's theme, "All In", we reflect on the importance of recognising and respecting those connections.

Before a hydrogen truck moves freight, its fuel cell stack needs to perform reliably. But how does a fuel cell actually work? 🤔⚡

A fuel cell converts hydrogen into electricity through an electrochemical reaction. Hydrogen and oxygen combine inside the system to generate electricity that can power a vehicle. The only by-products at the point of use are water and heat 💧 No combustion required.

At the Deakin Hydrogen Hub, researchers test fuel cells under controlled conditions designed to reflect real-world operation 🔬 From single cells through to multi-kilowatt systems, testing helps assess performance, durability and efficiency before technologies move beyond the lab.

Hydrogen explained. One step closer to understanding the technologies helping shape Australia’s clean energy future 🚛🌱

What does the latest conversation around hydrogen mean for our region and Australia’s clean energy future? ⚡🚛

This week, our Interim Director Adam Fletcher joined Jeremy Lee on ABC South WestVictoria to chat about the current state of play for hydrogen following recent budget announcements. It was also a great opportunity to share some of the exciting work happening at the Deakin Hydrogen Hub. 🎙️

We’re continuing to build partnerships, support research, create education pathways and help prepare for the technologies and jobs of the future. 🔬🤝🎓

Conversations like this help keep communities informed and connected as the energy transition continues to evolve. 🌏

New signs, same mission 💧⚡

Our signage has officially been updated as we transition from Hycel to the Deakin Hydrogen Hub.

We’re proud to continue supporting hydrogen research, industry collaboration and future workforce development right here in South-West Victoria 🌱

Last week we were proud to be part of The Deakin Difference in Warrnambool, a really insightful and uplifting evening that brought together our local community, students, alumni and partners. 🌱

On the night, Loren shared our Dr FuelCell® demonstration system with guests. It’s a hands-on way to show how hydrogen works, from using water and electricity to create hydrogen, through to generating electricity again using a fuel cell. ⚡ It’s something we often use in school engagement, helping make a complex topic easier to understand and sparking great conversations about the future of clean energy.

It was also fantastic to see the range of work happening across Deakin’s Warrnambool campus. From the CREATE Careers Clinics program supporting young people in the region, to student stories like Aisha’s, who spoke about the impact a scholarship has had on her journey studying medicine locally.

Guests also had the chance to connect with teams from Occupational Therapy and Medicine, including a demonstration of the SynDaver used in medical training.

Thank you to everyone who came along and took the time to chat with us, and to the Advancement team for bringing such a great event together. 😊

Not all hydrogen is created equal ⚡

Unlike fossil fuels, hydrogen doesn’t exist freely at scale. It has to be made. And how it’s produced plays a big role in its environmental impact.

Different production methods use different energy sources and processes. That means the emissions linked to hydrogen can vary significantly.

Understanding these differences helps make sense of the role hydrogen can play in the transition to lower emissions.

At the Deakin Hydrogen HubHydrogen Hub, the focus is on how hydrogen technologies are tested, applied and optimised. But responsible use starts with understanding the full picture, including how hydrogen is produced.

🌏 Earth Day 2026 | Our Power, Our Planet

The shift to cleaner energy is something we all have a role in.

Hydrogen is one of the options being explored to reduce emissions, especially in areas like heavy transport and industry.

At the Deakin Hydrogen Hub, we’re working with partners to test how hydrogen systems perform in real-world conditions, helping build a clearer picture of what works in practice.

Because moving toward a more sustainable future isn’t just about big ideas, it’s about finding solutions that work for people, industry and communities.

Hydrogen safety starts with design 🔧

All fuels contain energy and all fuels need to be handled with care. Hydrogen is no different. What matters is how it’s used.

Hydrogen systems are engineered with safety built in:
✔️ Leak detection and automatic shut-off
✔️ Sealed, secure refuelling connections
✔️ Storage systems designed to isolate supply in a collision

Hydrogen vehicles are also crash tested to the same standards as other vehicles.

At the Deakin Hydrogen Hub, safety underpins everything we do, from lab design through to testing and real-world application.

It’s not an add-on. It’s built in.
