Flashback Friday!

Occupational health and safety considerations weren’t high on the list for water authorities back in 1939, judging by these images from our archives!

A group of men, and even a schoolboy, are perched casually on the edge of Terang’s water storage tank watching the water flow in for the first time.

The 2.5 megalitre tank, on Bradshaw’s Hill, was built as part of the Otway Water Supply Scheme and is still in use today.

Terang was connected to the Otway scheme in early 1939. Prior to that, Lake Terang served as the primary source of drinking water for the early township. At times over the years the lake dried up completely and, in 1933, the peat bed caught on fire and burnt for weeks.

The need for a reliable water supply became obvious in 1916 when a disastrous fire destroyed 14 shops along High Street, including a bank, two chemists, coach factory and billiard hall. The fire brigade and a large body of willing workers were quickly on the scene, but owing to the absence of an adequate water supply, very little could be done to combat the blaze.

Pump ragging might sound like a new dance move, but it’s a serious issue for our maintenance crews!

It’s caused by wet wipes, rags, hair and other items making their way into our sewerage systems. These don’t break down when flushed and can get caught in our pumps’ propellers.

Help keep our systems running smoothly, only flush the three Ps – p*e, poo and (toilet) paper!

Running a small business can be challenging. If you’re having trouble paying your water bill, we can help with options including payment extensions, temporary payment pauses and bonus credits.

Need more time? You can apply for a one-off payment extension of up to two weeks through myWannonWater. If you need longer, get in touch with our team.

Bonus credits can also help eligible small businesses struggling to get on top of their bills. Businesses with fewer than 20 full-time equivalent employees may be able to receive bonus credits when making regular on-time payments. For every third payment, we can add a matching bonus credit, up to $1,700 per year.

It’s almost time for our final Warrnambool Women’s Mentor March of 2026!

We’re getting up early for a morning session on Wednesday 4 November.

A big thanks to the team at are-able Warrnambool who are helping us re-label some of our merchandise bottles.

After a printing error meant the bottles couldn’t be used as they were, we got new stickers to give them a second life, saving them from landfill.

We couldn’t have done it without the are-able team. A win-win collaboration!
