To accurately and safely measure high voltage, you'll want to use circuits designed specifically for that purpose - circuits designed to work in the kilovolt range have different requirements than other types of circuits and care must be taken to follow the correct procedures for working with circuits operating in this way.

This circuit demonstrates an intelligent design that provides increased accuracy and safety while measuring high voltage. By using a high resistor voltage divider along with an AD795 precision op-amp, high voltage is measured using accurate yet still precise readings from the multimeter. therefore, this circuit can therefore be used for laboratory research and experimentation.

This circuit also incorporates a buffer amplifier; the buffer amplifier isolates the multimeter from the high voltage circuits enabling the multimeter to correctly operate within the required voltages by providing the necessary voltage to the multimeter. As always: when working with kilovolt circuits, you must observe proper insulation, wear protective gear and employ safe practices while working in the kilovolt range.

Knowing how this circuit functions will help you, however, if you build or experiment with circuits without the appropriate knowledge and safety measures you may end up injuring yourself.
