Miniaturized Augmented Infrared Vision for Air Defense

We are proud to contribute to the QuantumSight project, advancing next generation Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) imaging.

Modern airborne defense systems demand imaging that performs in the toughest environments. SWIR technology sees through fog, haze, and smoke, enhances object recognition, and enables laser detection but current systems are costly, bulky, and limited.

QuantumSight changes that. Together with consortium partners QustomDot, iMEC, CSL, and RMA, we’re developing compact, high resolution, cost effective SWIR sensors powered by quantum dot technology. This innovation supports the EU’s Strategic Compass objectives by strengthening defence capabilities and reducing technological dependencies.

Expected outcomes: prototype sensor based on quantum dots, prototype SWIR camera systems, technical publications, outdoor validation data, and a roadmap for commercialization via Exosens’ global network.

QuantumSight is redefining infrared vision making defense imaging smaller, smarter, and more sustainable.

This research is funded by the Belgian Defence (Royal Higher Institute of Defense, RHID) under contract 25NGCAT007.

Maritime Safety refers to the protection of the crew and passengers aboard vessels which includes those living or working near water bodies from hazardous situations. With the help of thermal images captured by long-wave infrared cameras, hazardous situations can be avoided, and maritime safety can be established.

Long-wave infrared cameras are excellent in the detection and identification of objects that are not visible to the naked eyes or radar systems. In addition, with the ability to operate in low-light conditions, dense fog, long-wave infrared cameras can capture thermal images to assist the vessels in identifying potential hazards like other ships, icebergs and debris at sea. The destructive capabilities of fire need little to no introduction. Every year, billions of dollars are lost due to the damage caused by accidents or natural occurrences such as wildfires. Timely location and handling of a fire when it occurs help prevent further, and sometimes irreversible damage to businesses or the environment.

Infrared Imaging can be a useful tool to combat such incidents. Visible cameras can efficiently detect smoke but are unable to locate the source of the fire. SWIR and uncooled LWIR cameras can pe*****te smoke, easily locating the source of the fire for firefighting teams to swiftly extinguish the fire.

Thermal cameras not only help to detect sources of fires but can also determine if there are people present in the scene. This saves valuable time crucial in search & rescue operations.
