Both steel and aluminum react with oxygen through a process called oxidation, but while oxidation destroys steel, it actually protects aluminum.

Here is the material science breakdown behind why:

1. Steel Scaling (Volume Expansion):
When steel oxidizes, iron oxide forms and expands up to 600% in volume. That internal pressure cracks protective paint or powder coating, causing the rust to flake off and continually expose fresh bare metal to road salt and moisture.

2. Aluminum Passivation (Self-Healing Shield):
When bare aluminum contacts oxygen, it undergoes passivation, instantly forming a dense, microscopic layer of Aluminum Oxide. Unlike rust, this layer doesn't flake away. It bonds tightly to the surface, creating an airtight, non-porous shield against water and winter de-icers.

See the Difference: Continuous Aluminum Welding and Tack Welding

We believe one of the best ways to understand how a trailer is built is to see the work being done. This close-up provides a clear look at how the distinctive weld bead on a Nordtek aluminum trailer takes shape, and how it differs from tack welding.

Tack welds are short, separate welds commonly used to hold components in position before final welding. Each tack is made individually, with unwelded space remaining between it and the next.

The process shown here is different. Our welder uses Pulse-on-Pulse technology and specialized push-pull equipment while maintaining the trigger and active arc throughout the weld.

As the weld pool progresses continuously along the joint, controlled changes in the welding waveform create the stacked or rippled profile visible in the finished bead.

In a photograph, those individual ripples can resemble a row of separate welds. In the video, however, you can see that the arc remains active rather than repeatedly stopping and restarting. The result is one continuous, hand-controlled aluminum weld bead.

Nordtek does not use tack welds as a substitute for completed structural welds. The weld shown here is a continuous finished weld joining the components along the length of the joint, not a series of isolated tacks.

Greetings Trailer Community!

Recent online discussion involving a Nordtek trailer has generated interest in our welding process. Let's talk about it.

One of our trailers had a defective weld. That weld did not meet the standard we expect from our products, and we took responsibility by authorizing and covering a local repair through our warranty process since the trailer was not in proximity to our service departments.

We proudly stand behind every trailer we produce, the warranties that cover them, the manufacturing processes that produce them, and most of all, the amazing people that pull them.

Aluminum welding is a specialized discipline requiring material-specific processes, equipment, and experience. We will be posting some educational material over the next few days to help potential Nordtek buyers better understand our welding process and the care that's taken to ensure every Nordtek trailer stands the test of time and use.

Nordtek trailers are hand-welded by experienced aluminum welders using a specialized continuous-puddle welding process supported by Pulse-on-Pulse technology and push-pull welding equipment. Throughout the weld, the arc remains active while the welder manages heat, wire delivery, and weld progression to form a controlled series of overlapping weld puddles. This process creates strong aluminum welds and visual characteristics that are consistent with handcrafted products.

So...sorry to be anticlimactic, but no, our trailers are in fact not tack welded.
