When is backpack LiDAR mapping a better choice than vehicle-mounted mobile mapping?
Not every mapping project can be completed from a vehicle. Pedestrian areas, narrow pathways, building interiors, and spaces with limited vehicle access often require a different approach. Backpack LiDAR systems provide a practical solution by allowing a reality capture specialist to walk through an area while collecting 3D spatial data. Using LiDAR sensors, positioning technology, and imaging systems, the equipment captures the surrounding environment to create detailed point clouds that can be used for mapping, measurements, and asset documentation.
In busy areas, backpack mapping can be particularly useful for collecting information about sidewalks, storefronts, street furniture, building façades, and other features that may be difficult to capture completely from a vehicle. It's also useful for indoor mapping, pedestrian corridors, campuses, industrial facilities, and other areas where traditional mobile mapping equipment cannot easily operate. For municipalities, engineers, and infrastructure managers, backpack LiDAR provides another way to collect existing-condition data while reducing the need for extensive manual measurements.
