Forty years ago, Peter Terrett set out on what became the first GPS survey in Victoria, Australia. In this recent article from Spatial Source, Peter takes us on a journey of what it was like to survey with 1986 equipment. Spoiler: It took a long time, a lot of money, and even more patience.

Take a trip down memory lane with Peter to learn what it was like to use GPS in its earliest days 👉️ https://www.spatialsource.com.au/remembering-victorias-first-gps-enabled-survey/

Meanwhile, join us in congratulating Peter, Lyn Terrett, and their team at 4D Global as they celebrate 40 years in the industry.

And Peter, if we may: It's time to bring back that mustache! (But leave the legacy GPS in the past ...) 😉 😎

World Oceans Day serves as an important reminder of the need to cherish and safeguard our oceans, which are vital to our planet's sustainability and livability. Oceans are not only the lifeblood of Earth, covering over 70% of its surface, but they also provide a home for diverse marine life and support the livelihoods of millions of people globally. The presence of oceans is one of the first signs of potential habitability when scientists explore other planets, as they can be a key indicator of the possibility for life to thrive.

Today, we pay tribute to the dedicated individuals who devote their lives to studying our oceans and their profound influence on our ecosystems. Among these committed researchers, we would like to shine a light on Kyle Emery. His groundbreaking work focuses on the impact of seasonal sea level changes on coastal communities. Emery’s research, which you can explore in more detail at https://buff.ly/DpVwCpc, provides valuable insights into the impact of ocean levels.

🚴‍♂️ Happy World Bicycle Day! 🚴‍♀️

Every remarkable journey on two wheels begins with a well-crafted map. Understanding the locations of bike trails not only facilitates their upkeep but also ensures that everyone can relish the beauty and adventure they offer.

Comprehensive maps and trail guides are essential tools for municipalities and cycling enthusiasts alike, as they highlight paths, indicate trail difficulty, and provide information on amenities like rest stops and scenic viewpoints. Moreover, accurate mapping empowers local authorities and volunteer groups to maintain these trails effectively, addressing issues like erosion or debris, which could hinder their accessibility.

Happy to all those dedicated individuals and organizations who tirelessly work to keep our beloved trails open, enjoyable, and safe for all cyclists!

Did you miss it?

Esri Water published this article showcasing how the City of Oak Hill Sanitary Board in Oak Hill, West Virginia, turned a manhole rehabilitation project into a GIS opportunity.

See how they collaborated with inspectors to collect new location data and standardized attributes for over 600 manholes as the infrastructure was physically transformed. Not only did they reduce infiltration and inflow (I&I) with the physical rehab, but they also reduced headaches that stemmed from legacy inaccurate manhole locations. Now instead of looking in the bushes for a manhole that's right under their truck, they can rely on the GIS maps.

When our technical team was developing the Skadi Smart Handle, they had safety in mind. No more getting into trenches or a live-rail zone just to take a quick GPS point. But this is still one of our newest technologies, so we rely on our customers to share with us the unique uses they're finding for the smart handle.

Which brings us to LCEC (Lee County Electric Cooperative) in Florida. We had to smile big when LCEC showed us how they're mapping assets like this electric pole, which is in a canal. Notice anything besides water in the canal? 🐊

While the alligator is fake (thank you, AI), the safety and efficiency are real. And as LCEC notes, they do see real alligators from time to time.

Thank you, LCEC, for sharing how you keep your staff safe, members served, and humor high while taking care of electrical infrastructure in some "jaw"-dropping places. 😉

Ready for another fun holiday we're about to connect to GPS? 🤗

Tomorrow is Water a Flower Day! So today, we're spotlighting Eastern Municipal Water District, California’s sixth-largest public water utility, for their leadership in sustainable watering practices.

EMWD does a great job keeping their workers safe with cutting-edge field technology — all while preserving California's limited water resources. In fact their recycled water program, which supports local landscaping projects, is a model of high-accuracy GIS.

👏 Kudos to EMWD for setting an example in water stewardship!
