Ready for the return of Fun Fact Friday?

Today we're explaining GPS "blocks." A block is basically a satellite generation. Just like an iPhone might belong to the 16th generation, all GPS satellites do. Block I was the first GPS generation, released in the late 1970s and not available for civilian use. Here are the subsequent generations:

2️⃣ / 2️⃣ 🅰️ Block II/IIA: 1989-1997
Released in the1990s. These were the first fully functional GPS satellites.

2️⃣ 🇷 Block IIR 1997-2004
The “R” stands for “replenishment.” These satellites had better accuracy and a longer lifespan.

2️⃣ 🇷 Ⓜ️ Block IIR-M: 2005-2009
These satellites were upgraded with a second civilian signal, improving GPS service for non-military users.

2️⃣ 🇫 Block IIF: 2010-2016
These satellites had more accurate atomic clocks, longer lifespans, and a third civilian signal added for aviation.

3️⃣ 🅰️ Block IIIA: 2018-Present (last updated 2025)
This is the newest generation. These satellites have the strongest signals and are more resistant to jamming.

At New Zealand’s Bioeconomy Science Institute Maiangi Taiao, field crews are using SouthPAN (the regional SBAS) with an Eos Arrow GNSS receiver to achieve sub-metre accuracy in real time. The enhanced accuracy has reduced point capture times from minutes to seconds, helping teams collect more reliable data faster and make better-informed management and research decisions in the field.

Many thanks to Spatial Source for sharing this article! Learn more about the group's work with SouthPan here:

SouthPAN enables New Zealand's Bioeconomy Science Institute to gather more data, more quickly and with better accuracy.

It's time for our monthly GNSS satellite status update!

Current satellite status month-over-month (based on data taken July 27, 2026): Since last month, total global operational orbital (usable) GNSS satellites have increased by 2. 🛰️🛰️ 🎉

Two constellations caused the uptick:

1. GPS's total operational orbiting satellites increased by 1 (30 returned to 31, as it was our May checkin).

2. Galileo's total operational orbiting satellites increased by 1 (27 increased to 28).

Note that satellites in the following constellations stayed the same month-over-month: BeiDou, GLONASS, QZSS, IRNSS.

Four months ago yesterday, the Texas Tribune reported Waller County, Texas, was the second-fastest growing county in the U.S.

Today, we honor the GIS professionals helping the county keep pace with that growth.

In a recent case-study collaboration, Waller County Road & Bridge shared how they transformed legacy hand-drawn road data into a digital, high-accuracy GIS. In just a short period, they mapped over 550 miles of county roads, inventoried 1,800+ culverts with their conditions, and "quick" captured 4,000+ street signs. Not only that, they created new tools to support 9-1-1 emergency response, maintenance, and public engagement.

Watch the video below to see how their small team delivered constituents huge value through their recent GIS projects.
