This September, we celebrate 10 years since the first turbine was installed at Gunn’s Hill Wind Farm!

The first turbine was constructed on September 4, 2016.

It has been an honour and a privilege powering our community with sustainable energy.

Thank you to all those who have been a part of our journey!

Fortescue has now added its 15th electric excavator to its mining operations, with each unit reportedly saving approximately one million litres of diesel every year.

Together, the electric excavators have already moved more than 100 million tonnes of ore.

But the bigger story is what’s powering them.

Fortescue is transitioning its operations away from diesel and toward an energy system increasingly supported by wind, solar, and battery storage, with plans to eventually operate 70 electric excavators alongside hundreds of electric haul trucks.

It’s an interesting look at the role renewable energy can play beyond the grid. As more equipment and industrial processes become electrified, the opportunity to power them with renewable energy grows too.

For a structure that reaches nearly 100 metres to the hub, you might expect the foundation at Gunn’s Hill to extend far deeper and wider than it actually does.

Each foundation extends approximately 2–3 metres below ground, with a radius of roughly 9–10 metres from the centre of the turbine.

That relatively compact footprint is carefully engineered to distribute the forces created by the turbine and provide the stability needed to support the structure above.

During a Midwest heat wave that pushed temperatures above 100°F, researchers observed that corn growing near a commercial wind turbine was coping with heat stress better than crops in surrounding areas.

They discovered that the turbine’s rotating blades created turbulent airflow that mixed layers of the atmosphere and changed the field’s microclimate.

Researchers found this airflow could:
• Bring cooler air into the crop canopy during hot daytime conditions
• Help morning dew evaporate faster, potentially reducing conditions favourable to fungal disease
• Mix warmer air toward the surface overnight, potentially lowering frost risk
• Increase air movement through the canopy, supporting the exchange of carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis

The findings offer an interesting perspective on the relationship between wind energy and agricultural land use.

As research continues, studies like this help us better understand how renewable energy can work alongside the land that hosts it.

What does a wind turbine actually sound like up close? 👀

At the Gunn’s Hill Wind Farm, starting approximately 150 metres away (much closer than a turbine would typically be located to a home or another structure), you can begin to hear the characteristic “swoosh” of the blades.

Then, we move to just 40 metres from the base. Turn your volume up and listen to what an operating wind turbine sounds like from up close!

Does the sound surprise you?

At Prowind, we believe meaningful community engagement starts long before a project is proposed.

While there is currently no projected development, we felt it was important to begin these conversations early, creating opportunities to listen, answer questions, and ensure residents have access to clear, factual information from the very beginning.

A sincere thank you to Nicole and the Wellington Advertiser for taking the time to cover our recent community information sessions in Minto.

Transparency is fundamental to us, and we value the participation and constructive dialogue we’ve seen from the community.
