At Oerlikon, operational excellence is not only about improving processes - it is about building capabilities that help our teams create more value every day.

Our colleagues at Oerlikon Riri and Oerlikon Fineparts have launched a cross-functional Lean Six Sigma Green Belt initiative, bringing together teams from Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Industrialization and HR across multiple sites in Italy and Switzerland.

Through structured training, real-case project work and coaching, the program has established a certified internal Green Belt team equipped to apply the DMAIC method - Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control - to drive measurable improvements across the organization.

The focus is clear:
✔ reduce waste across the supply chain
✔ decrease variability and defects in production processes
✔ strengthen a shared, data-driven language from production to quality
✔ free up capacity that can be reinvested in innovation

Our innovation has won the Houska Prize in the University Research category - one of the most prestigious research awards in the German‑speaking region.

Oerlikon has been working with Plansee Composites on the publicly funded “The Hotter, the Better” project at the Christian Doppler Laboratory at the Technische Universität Wien for seven years. The result of this collaboration is a refined version of Oerlikon’s BALINIT TURBINE PRO ceramic protective coating. It can withstand temperatures exceeding 1,000°C, as well as oxidation, corrosion and erosion. It extends the service life of turbine components by over 50 per cent.

The Houska Prize, founded in 2005 by the B&C Private Foundation, is Austria’s largest privately awarded prize for application-oriented research. The prize money will go entirely to the participating institutions to fund further research and help push innovation even further.

We are proud to have been among the top three finalists and honoured to have taken first place in such a distinguished field. This innovation will now be integrated into our product portfolio, driving greater efficiency in high-demand industrial applications.
