In 1937, Focke-Wulf flew a fighter roughly 80 km/h faster than the Bf 109 - on the very same engines. Twice the range. Twice the weight, and it still outran the aircraft it was measured against. Nine were built. The Fw 187 Falke is the story of a superb design that nobody in Berlin wanted.

Some aircraft are cancelled because they fail. The Douglas F5D Skylancer was cancelled because it was too good. It went supersonic on its very first flight, handled beautifully, and impressed every pilot who touched it — including a young NASA test pilot named Neil Armstrong, who later used one to practise landing the X-20 spaceplane.
