Did you know that we eat the equivalent of a credit card every week? 💳

That sounds absurd – but according to WHO estimates, that's roughly how much microplastic the average person consumes.

On World Environmental Day the world pauses to reflect on the state of our planet. And there's one invisible threat we can no longer afford to ignore: . 🌎

First identified in the early 2000s, microplastics (particles smaller than 5mm) have since been found in the deepest ocean trenches, in the air we breathe, and yes, in the food on our plates. 🍽️

How does it get there? Here are the main ways microplastics enter our :

📦 Packaging
🌊 Water & soil
🍳 Cookware

What began as a packaging convenience has become one of the most pervasive pollution crises of our time. However, the long-term health effects of microplastics are still not fully understood.

What do you do to reduce your plastic consumption for a safer environment? Let us know in the comments!

protects you – but what's really inside? ☀️

Sun protection is essential. However, recent studies reveal that certain sunscreens can unintentionally release a reproductive toxin right inside the body.

How is that possible?

Many sunscreens contain the UV filter DHHB (Diethylhexylbutamidotriazone), which reliably shields against UVA radiation. The issue: during metabolism, the body can convert it into the breakdown product mono-n-hexyl phthalate (MnHexP) – a phthalate classified as reproductively toxic. 🔬

Germany's Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) states: there is no acute health risk at this time. Nevertheless, the precautionary principle applies – especially for children, exposure to such substances should be kept as low as possible. 🇩🇪

On the regulatory side, the EU Regulation 2026/909 (published April 2026) introduces a limit of 10 ppm for di-n-hexyl phthalate (DnHP) as a trace impurity in DHHB – a significant step forward for product safety. ⚖️

If you produce sun care products, now is the time to act:
🟢 Test raw materials and finished products specifically for phthalates
🟢 Ensure compliance with the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC No. 1223/2009)
🟢 Build consumer trust through verifiable quality assurance

Detection requires highly sensitive methods such as GC-MS and HPLC-MS. In accordance with the requirements of the EU Cosmetics Regulation, our laboratories support you in the analysis of sunscreens for plasticizers and phthalates – including MnHexP and DnHP.

Growing together - that was the theme of our recent DACH Food management meeting in Berlin ⛵

Each department of our company shared updates on ongoing projects, challenges and achievements for more transparency and a cross-departmental exchange of ideas.

We also discussed strategies for further growth, customer relationships and sales in the DACH region. Important topics were supported by best practices from the labs, so we can see clearly which areas work well and which ones need more improvement. 📊

Strong collaboration, open communication, and shared expertise are key to driving sustainable growth across our network. 🤝

Follow us and stay tuned for our projects - we are planning big things for you ✨

Last week, we asked a simple question at the start of our Food safety and beyond Seminar: How well-prepared is the food industry for the challenges ahead?

The conversation that followed was clear: the complexity is growing, and so is the need for practical, science-based answers.

Against this backdrop, together with industry experts, we explored the latest developments in our field. Among others, we talked about:
🟢 Aroma & Flavor
🟢 Microplastics
🟢 Microbiological risks
🟢 Contaminants such as PFAS and BPA
🟢 Food fraud
🟢 HACCP
🟢 IFS requirements

A big thank you to our speakers Dr. Monika Christlbauer, Simone Schmidt, Dr. Anna Romanotto, Paul Andrei, Ariane Cofré, Beate Heidorn and Andreas Müller for their valuable practical insights and for highlighting how dynamic and complex our industry continues to be.

Beyond the presentations, the networking sessions created a great opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss best practices, and build new connections across the industry.

Last but not least, thank you to our CEO Dr. Christian Rebhan, our organizing team and all participants for making this event possible. The next seminar is already in planning. Follow us to be the first to know. ✨

Great experience at Swiss Biotech Days 2026 in Basel!

It was a pleasure being part of such a vibrant event in one of Europe’s leading biotech hubs. The program offered an impressive mix of inspiring keynote presentations, insightful panel discussions, vendor exhibition, and networking opportunities.

The energy, innovation, and collaborative spirit across the biotech community were truly inspiring.

Our team from VelaLabs - a Tentamus company - is grateful for reconnecting with familiar faces and making new connections across the biotech community. We are already looking forward to turning these relationships into meaningful and impactful collaborations.

How well can we really identify familiar smells? 👃

We thought we would - but it turned out to be more challenging than expected.

During a recent sensory testing team event, our colleagues in Berlin worked with aroma sticks featuring 10 distinct smells and tried to identify them.

💡 Our learnings:
Even familiar and clearly defined smells can be surprisingly difficult to identify accurately under testing conditions.

This is exactly why sensory training plays an important role: it helps sharpen olfactory recognition and improves consistency in smell-based evaluation.

A huge THANK YOU to aromaLAB for sending us the aroma sticks. 💚
