The PPWR requires that packaging be designed from the outset in such a way that, after use, it can be easily separated, collected, sorted and recycled to a high standard on a large scale.

The PPWR states, that:

• Priority must be given to the use of single-material packaging
• Packaging components must be easy to separate completely into the appropriate material streams

What does the ‘recyclability’ criterion mean according to the PPWR?♻️
Packaging should be designed in such a way that it can actually be recycled at the end of its life cycle. The aim is to achieve higher sorting and recycling rates in the EU.

In other words, packaging should:

• be easy to recycle
• not contain unnecessary material combinations
• be made of single-material components rather than composite materials

How does this affect our packaging machines? 🔧

• our machines process mono-films, which are single-material and recyclable within established plastic streams ☑️
• our machines process Mondi 95/5 paper, which fits well with the EU’s circular economy strategy ☑️
• our machines process post-consumer recycled (PCR) film ☑️

Our machines therefore meet the requirement to process only recyclable and recycled materials and help our customers achieve PPWR compliance.

Focus on: PPWR – Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU 2025/40)

“What is the PPWR and why does it affect us all?”

The PPWR is the new EU packaging regulation which aims to ensure that packaging is used in a more resource-efficient manner and that the use is reduced. The goal is to strengthen the circular economy an increase the recycling rate.

The key criteria are recyclability, design for recycling, material complexity, and volume and weight reduction. From 2030 to 2040, phased recycling rates and reusable packaging targets will apply. ♻️

In June, we aim to explain the PPWR to you and highlight the benefits and opportunities for our packaging machine which you use to produce packaging.

Our machine portfolio directly supports the PPWR objectives as it processes mono- and PCR films and paper. This helps our customers meet the progressively increasing recycling targets. 💯
