Immunofluorescence image showing microtubule bundling induced in NIH3T3 cells upon overexpression of the head domain of the microtubule plus-end tracking protein CLIP-170. Cells were fixed with paraformaldehyde (PFA) and stained for microtubules (TUB-1A2, red), CLIP-170 (green), and nuclei (DAPI, blue). Imaging was performed on a Nikon Eclipse Ti2-E inverted widefield microscope using a 60x oil immersion objective.

Does life begin differently without gravity?🌌

🌟 Congratulations to Hannah Lyons and her supervisor Nicole McPherson from The The University of Adelaide on their recent publication in Springer Nature Communications Biology!

The study tackles a fascinating question: what happens to reproduction when gravity is no longer part of the equation?

The researchers looked at how simulated microgravity affects s***m navigation, fertilization, and early embryo development across humans, mice, and pigs. Their findings show that microgravity can interfere with s***m navigation and fertilization, with effects varying between species and exposure times. Interestingly, progesterone helped restore human s***m navigation under simulated microgravity🧑‍🚀

As humans look toward longer missions beyond Earth, studies like this help us understand how some of our most fundamental biological processes might respond to life in space.

The image shows human aged fibroblasts exhibiting features of cellular senescence, a state of stable growth arrest associated with aging and stress responses. Mitochondria (cyan), the actin cytoskeleton (purple to red), and lysosomes (gold) reveal characteristic changes in organelle morphology and cellular organization. The cell was cultured in a µ-Dish 35 mm, high and imaged on a ZEISS Group LSM 900 confocal microscope using a 40× oil immersion objective.
