What our R&D process looks like

Blauberg Motoren has its own R&D team that oversees development from the initial technical inquiry through to the launch of the product into mass production. Our approach to development depends on the type of task and this is what determines the timeline and complexity of implementation.

We distinguish between two types of development:

- Customization of the existing product line adapting existing fans to specific customer requirements: changing the wire length, installing a special connector, adjusting power, changing the impeller press-fit depth, etc. For EC fans, changes to aerodynamic characteristics are achieved by adjusting software parameters, whereas for AC fans, this requires modifying the stator winding;
- Development of new solutions creating highly customized or fundamentally new designs that are not currently in the company’s portfolio.

Regardless of the type, the process follows the same stages:

1. Assessment of the request and project approval with the client;
2. Development of design documentation by the R&D team;
3. Manufacturing or ordering production tooling (if necessary);
4. Assembly of a prototype and transfer to the laboratory;
5. Conducting aerodynamic and climatic tests;
6. Client approval of the results and launch into mass production.

Delivery times for standard customizations range from 4 to 6 weeks. More complex projects requiring the manufacture of additional tooling or the development of new design solutions have customized delivery schedules. We are open to any inquiry and it is our in-house R&D team that allows us to respond flexibly to the needs of each client.

What fan customization means for B2B customers?

BLAUBERG MOTOREN has its own range of standard fans, covering a wide spectrum of standard applications. However, customer needs are rarely standard and that is precisely why customization is an integral part of our approach to working with B2B partners.

It starts with a meeting between the customer and our team, where we work together to get a clear understanding of the customer’s needs: the desired aerodynamic performance, capacity, dimensions, design type, production volume, and other requirements for the final product. This is the foundation without it, any discussion of customization remains abstract. After agreeing on all parameters, we move on to development, testing, and preparing for production.

We can customize the following parameters for the client:

1. Operating voltage. We comply with the most common AC and DC standards.
2. Power. We have a wide range of motors that we adapt to the client’s needs.
3. Overall dimensions and casing design can be tailored to specific tasks.
4. Control protocols for EC fans: compatible with 0-10V, PWM, and Modbus RTU.
5. Cable length and connector type are selected according to the client’s requirements.
6. Certification. We hold basic certifications for major global markets and can obtain additional ones as needed

Fan customization is not just about changing technical parameters. For B2B clients, it means, above all:

Why the P-Q curve is essential for accurate fan selection?

Selecting a fan starts with understanding its aerodynamic characteristics. The key tool here is the P-Q curve - a graph that shows the relationship between pressure (P) and airflow (Q). It is this curve that shows how the fan will perform in the system.

The P-Q curve covers the entire operating range of the fan. To read it properly, one must understand the key elements:

- Pmax: the fan pressure in a fully closed system with zero airflow;
- Qmax: airflow with no system resistance;
- Operating point: the intersection of the fan curve with the system resistance curve - one of the key criteria for choosing a fan;
- Point of maximum efficiency: the point with the highest efficiency - the closer the operating point is to it, the more efficiently the fan operates;
- Operating and non-operating zones - it is important to understand that not the entire graph represents the fan’s efficient operating range. Depending on the impeller type, certain sections of the curve fall outside the operating range - typically, these are sections of the graph closer to zero values.

When selecting a fan for a specific system, several important factors should be considered:

1. Determine the operating point - the desired pressure and airflow. System components, particularly filters, create additional resistance and reduce the fan’s actual performance - this should be taken into account;
2. Select a fan that has margin - filters become clogged, and resistance increases. Additionally, when operating at maximum capacity, a fan consumes more energy, generates more noise, and wears out faster;
3. Note the shape of the curve - a steep curve indicates a significant drop in airflow with only a slight increase in resistance, while a flatter curve ensures a more stable flow under variable load conditions;
4. Compare only curves obtained using the same methodology - leading manufacturers conduct measurements on specialized aerodynamic test stands, which provide more accurate results compared to wind tunnels.

At the Blauberg Motoren lab, aerodynamic tests are conducted on the company’s own wind tunnel in accordance with the ANSI/AMCA 210-07 standard, which guarantees the reliability and replicability of the results.

Why EC motors are replacing AC solutions in modern ventilation?

The industrial ventilation market is undergoing a significant transformation. More and more manufacturers of ventilation equipment are moving away from traditional AC-motor-based solutions in favor of EC technology. But what is the fundamental difference between an EC fan and an AC fan and why is this transition inevitable?

The AC fan is a proven technology that has been in use for decades. However, its key weakness is its fixed rotational speed and low efficiency in converting electrical energy into mechanical energy.
