🌐🌊 This , we're celebrating with the release of the third chapter of the OCEAN CITIZEN comic series, exploring the fascinating process of ecological succession: 🌱➡️🌿➡️🪸🐟 how gradually grow from pioneer species into diverse, resilient ecosystems through countless interactions and stages of development.

What may seem like an empty underwater surface today can become a thriving marine community tomorrow. But restoration is never instant. It depends on balance, adaptation, resilience, and time. ✨🔬 Our new comic uses , illustration, and science to show how marine ecosystems evolve and why understanding these natural processes is essential for successful restoration. It also reminds us that restoring the ocean is a collective journey.

Of course, both ecosystems and restoration efforts face challenges, from climate change and eutrophication to administrative barriers. Yet the story remains one of hope: when we work with nature and with each other, recovery becomes possible 🤝💙

🌍 From the Arctic waters of 🇳🇴 Norway to the warm Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of 🇪🇸 Spain, 🇩🇰 Denmark, and 🇮🇱 Israel, OCEAN CITIZEN’s five pilot sites are living laboratories for marine restoration and climate adaptation.

Discover what has been happening since the beginning of the project in 2023, and explore how each site is testing innovative restoration strategies adapted to its unique environmental conditions.

📍 Pilot Sites:
• Tenerife – Spain
• Tarragona – Spain
• Porsangerfjorden – Norway
• Køge Bay – Denmark
• Eliat – Israel

Last October, teams from CEAB-CSIC and ULPGC carried out 15 intensive days of underwater fieldwork in Gran Canaria to better understand and protect two important species in the Canary Islands: 𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢 and 𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴.

📍 At El Roque de Taliarte, near the ECOAQUA-ULPGC facilities, researchers monitored population health, survivorship, and growth rates at depths of around 30 meters, while also improving restoration methodologies through floating nurseries designed to support future transplantation efforts in Tenerife.

Gorgonians are essential habitat-forming species that contribute to and ecosystem . Monitoring their demographic and environmental conditions helps scientists better understand how these vulnerable communities respond to environmental stress and climate-related thermal anomalies.

From 24 to 26 March, OCEAN CITIZEN partners gathered in Copenhagen for the project’s annual to review progress, coordinate upcoming activities, and reflect on the next steps as the project enters a key implementation phase.

The meeting also offered the opportunity to connect discussions with restoration in action through a field visit across ’s canals, where local initiatives are working to restore marine habitats and improve biodiversity in urban waters.
