We're calling on you - our supporters and those of community energy more generally...
Please ask your MP to join over 100 others to sign Parliamentary Early Day Motion (EDM) 2151 ‘Buying community energy locally’- https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/64572/buying-community-energy-locally
The more MPs we can bring on board, the better our chance of making the Government act to establish local supply rights for community energy schemes.
Previous organising by Power for People led to the Energy Security and Net Zero Minister, Michael Shanks, saying this in Parliament (in a reply to a formal question), “He is right to make the point about delivering clean power that benefits local communities, so that they can buy it locally and really see the benefit of hosting it. That is exactly what we are determined to do and we will continue to work to make it happen.”
However, that was on 15th July last year – over half a year ago, with no further announcement since. Hence EDM 2151 calls for an end to this long delay.
Could you please help by writing to your MP asking them to, ‘Please sign EDM 2151, which calls on the Government to enable people to buy community energy locally?’
We encourage people to write messages in their own words, as this is usually far more effective. And please share any reply you receive from your MP with [email protected] as this greatly helps them to track support.
One extra thing – quite a few people have asked: What if my MP says they don’t sign EDMs? Here’s our advice on that front:
If your MP is reluctant to sign EDM 2151, as some have been, please ask them whether they support it in principle. If they say yes, that will be valuable for this campaign as we can list them publicly as supportive. And please, again, share any reply you receive with [email protected]
EDMs are a valuable way for MPs to publicly put their name to an issue. Many successful campaigns for new environmental laws that P4P have worked on – including the Doorstep Recycling Act 2003 and the Climate Change Act 2008 – used EDMs to build valuable support from hundreds of MPs.
That this House recognises the many social, economic and environmental benefits that community energy schemes create; notes that the number of such schemes would grow greatly if they were enabled to sell their clean power directly to households and businesses in their communities; welcomes the Minis...
