Here is the simplest test in heating, and almost nobody does it.

Pick a mild day, turn the thermostat up, and let the system run for 20 minutes. Then walk round and put your hand on the top and bottom of every radiator. You are looking for cold patches, gurgling or banging, and any burning smell that lasts longer than the first few minutes.

Do it in August and you have eight weeks to sort a problem. Do it on the first frost and you have a cold house and a wait.

Three checks worth doing before you turn the heating on for the first time this year.

1. Look at the pressure gauge. A cold system should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar.
2. Run the heating for 20 minutes, then feel every radiator, top and bottom.
3. Test your carbon monoxide alarm. Press the button and listen for the beep.

If something looks off, sort it now rather than on the first frosty morning.

August looks quiet from the outside. The diary says otherwise.

Zoe is booking September services now, and once the first cold mornings hit Aberdeen the phone does not stop. Every year the same thing happens: the people who wait until October end up taking whatever slot is left.

Radiator cold at the bottom and warm at the top? That is usually trapped air. Bleed it.

Cold in the middle with warm edges? That is usually sludge, and bleeding will not fix it.

Aberdeen water is soft, so the problem here is not limescale. It is magnetite, the black corrosion sludge that builds up inside radiators and pipework over the years. It settles, restricts the flow and makes your boiler work harder than it needs to.

A power flush clears it out. Worth checking before you spend money on a new boiler.

What actually happens when you book a free boiler survey with us?

One of our engineers comes out at a time that suits you. They look at your current setup, how much hot water you use, how many bathrooms you are running and the pipework already in place. Usually 30 to 40 minutes.

Then you get a written quote by email. No sales pitch on the doorstep, no pressure, no today only pricing.

If you decide against it, that is fine. You still know exactly where you stand.

August is the quiet stretch before the first cold mornings. Then the same thing happens across Aberdeenshire every year: the heating goes on in late September and the phone does not stop.

So here is the honest tip. If your boiler is over ten years old, or it has been more than a year since it was last serviced, now is the easy time to sort it. Shorter waits and far more flexibility on appointment times.

Combi, system or regular? Here is the plain version.

Combi: heats water straight from the mains. No cylinder, no tank in the loft. Right for most one and two bathroom homes in Aberdeen.

System: works with a hot water cylinder. Runs two or three bathrooms at once without the pressure dropping off.

Regular: cylinder plus a cold water tank. Still common in older Aberdeenshire properties.

Ever wondered what actually happens during a boiler service? Here is the short version.

We check gas pressure and flow, run a combustion analysis, inspect the heat exchanger, burner and seals, test the safety devices and pressure relief valve, clean the condensate trap, and inspect the pipework surrounding the boiler. We also carry out a gas tightness test and a functional test with the boiler running at full load.

You get a benchbook entry and a digital record emailed to you.

Topping up your boiler pressure every week? Here are the 5 most common causes:

1. A small leak at a radiator valve or pipe joint
2. A faulty pressure relief valve
3. The expansion vessel needs recharging
4. You recently bled your radiators (this one is normal)
5. A failing internal component like an automatic air vent

If it is number 4, just repressurise and you are sorted. If it keeps happening, your system needs a proper look.
