Llanvetherine Barn began with a challenge that defined the entire design. Our clients wanted to add an oak-framed extension to their home, a property made up of from three barns constructed at different times and sitting at different roof heights. The extension had to connect at the point where all three buildings met, and with the lowest roof, a flat roof was the only realistic option. The difficulty was making sure the finished space still felt like an oak frame. Without a vaulted ceiling, flat-roof extensions can easily become plain and box-like, losing much of the character that makes oak framing appealing in the first place. Working alongside BB Design Services, we crafted an oak-frame solution that embraced the constraints of the site while retaining the presence and detail of a traditional frame.

A key part of that solution was the introduction of our recurve braces and matching beam-end profile. These details bring depth and visual interest to the frame, ensuring the oak remains a defining feature throughout the room despite the flat roof above. Floor-to-ceiling glazing was introduced to retain views across the landscape, while large bifold doors open onto a covered outdoor area complete with an outdoor kitchen. The extension and outdoor space work together as one place for family gatherings, summer evenings, and everyday living. What makes the project particularly rewarding is how it turned out.

Despite the scale of the wider house, our clients now spend nearly all of their time in this room off the kitchen. The combination of natural light, views, oak detailing, and direct access to the covered outdoor area has created the part of the house they use most. The property now shows how a constraint-led design can produce its own opportunities.

Having built several homes over the years, our clients, Dai and Nicola, wanted their house in Powys to carry an oak-frame theme throughout. Their plot already had a bungalow, so the intention was to craft the new home behind it, live on site throughout the project, and remove the original bungalow once the new house was complete. We were brought in to provide the specialist oak work that would become the defining feature of their home.

The oak theme is used beyond the main structure - at the front, an oak-framed porch creates a welcoming, statement entrance, while to the rear, a second porch provides a practical space for storing firewood, muddy boots, and the everyday essentials that come with life in the countryside.

The home features a glazed two-storey gable frame with a Juliet balcony, creating a striking focal point that fills the space with light while showcasing the character of the oak structure. Throughout the interior, oak roof structure, floor beams, and screen frames continue the theme, creating a consistent look that connects the different spaces within the house.

Together, they show how oak can serve both architectural and practical purposes within the same home. Finished to an exceptionally high standard throughout, this project demonstrates how carefully thought-through oak elements can bring character, structure, and continuity to a home.

Ely House began with a simple request to create a space that could bring family and friends together throughout the year, without feeling like just another garden building. Set within an irregularly shaped courtyard in the Vale of Glamorgan, the design adapts directly to its surroundings to create something that feels naturally connected to the site.

The oak-frame structure combines covered and open living in a way that feels easy and natural. Exposed oak roof framing, principal rafters, engineered oak tongue-and-groove internal lining, and the specialist Foxtail Oak face glazing system create a space filled with natural light and character. Large bifold doors open towards the pool, while the continuity of flooring between the interior and outdoor entertaining spaces helps the building connect with its surroundings.

Now, it’s the kind of place that gets used in all the ways it was meant to - summer barbecues, relaxed evenings by the pool, and those gatherings that start casually and end up lasting much longer than planned.

A little progress update — the crisp slate roof against the oak is really starting to shine. That contrast is what makes builds like this feel so special.

Next up: face glazing and the joinery going in, and that’s when the whole space really comes to life.

It’s already a fantastic addition to both the house and the garden — one of those projects that just fits its surroundings.

It’s been a busy week on site as we’ve raised the frame for this two‑bay oak garage. 🏗️
It’s always surprising how quickly an oak structure takes form once the beams start going up.
Next up: the roof and cladding — and even though it’s a simple design, it’s already clear it’s going to look fantastic.
