There’s a big difference between getting a wall built and getting a wall right.

From establishing the structure and following that sweeping curve, through to selecting, shaping and positioning each individual stone, every stage affects what you eventually see in the finished wall, and with dry stonework, the craftsmanship is the finish. There’s no render, cladding or final layer coming along to hide what’s underneath.

Just stone, skill and a lot of patience.

A proper transformation from the first course to the final coping stone and one we’re very proud of.

This dry stone wall has been built piece by piece, with every stone carefully selected and positioned to create the strength, shape and finish you see here and when you’re working with a curve like this, there’s nowhere for poor workmanship to hide.

Keeping that line flowing consistently from one end to the other takes time, experience and a proper eye for the stone.

A lot of work goes into something that, once finished, looks like it’s always belonged there — and that’s exactly the point.

Just checking…👀

There are a few things you start noticing when you've spent years working with stone, and unfortunately, once you see them, you can't unsee them 😂

Good stonework isn't just about how it looks on the day the job is finished. The right materials, proper pointing, experienced workmanship and taking the time to do things properly all make a difference to how it looks and performs years down the line.

So yes, we probably are judging that wall as we drive past it. Occupational hazard.

It always starts with a pile of stone. The skill is knowing what to do with it.

Every piece is different in its size, shape and character, which means building with natural stone isn’t a case of simply working your way through the pile. It’s choosing, shaping and positioning each piece so that everything works together in the finished build.

What starts off looking like a load of rubble eventually
becomes part of the property for decades to come.

One of our favourite things about projects like this is the contrast.

Contemporary architecture with large glazed openings and clean rooflines is softened by the warmth and character of natural stone. The result is a home that feels modern, but never clinical, and full of character from the day it’s is completed.

The real test of stonework isn't today. It's twenty years from now. Any wall can look good when the job has just been finished. The real measure of quality is how it performs after years of
weather, changing seasons and everyday life.

Good stonework should age naturally, retain its character and continue to look as though it belongs exactly where it stands.

That's why we focus on doing things properly from the start.
