It’s a great feeling, taking down a huge scaffold and unveiling months of hard work. This extended Farmhouse has a whole new silhouette, and is really starting to come together.

Since carefully stripping this listed building back to its original carcass, we’ve kept up a great pace all summer. As new internal limes dry, and we button up the external envelope, our focus now moves to internal finishes, where the original oak framing will remain a key focal point throughout.

It’s great to take a moment to appreciate how much work has gone into repairing, enhancing and future proofing this building before much of it gets closed back in.

Over in Arundel, having previously completed the main house, it was a real pleasure to return and extend that same level of attention and detail outside.

We’re looking for an experienced Heritage Carpenter to join our team.

This is a full-time role based in West Sussex, working across listed buildings, period homes, bespoke new builds and high-end refurbishments. We’re looking for someone with strong carpentry experience, particularly within heritage or period properties, who takes pride in careful workmanship and understands the level of detail these projects require.

The role will include heritage carpentry and restoration work, working alongside site teams and other trades, helping with day-to-day site coordination, and maintaining the standards our clients expect.

At Whiteways, with the drainage and services in place, the project has now risen from the ground through face brickwork to DPC, with the footings complete and the block and beam floor in.

From here, we prepare to erect the main structure, which will transition from steelwork into a glulam portal frame with SIPs walls and roof, forming what will become the main seating area of the new cafe.

We’ve been hidden behind hoarding up to this point, but now that we’re out of the ground, the full scale of this project will become apparent to the many keen passers by

Fine details are vital, but so is the wider vision for every project. It’s important to zoom in and zoom out, simultaneously.

At our site in Amberley, there’s no doubt that this striking extension is the focal point, but now that we’re water tight, our working area starts to expand. Our attention now spills both into the existing property and out to the surrounding landscape.

Internally, we’ve started breaking out the entire ground floor, and will be introducing new insulation and underfloor heating throughout ahead of fit out.

Externally, we will be reconfiguring this challenging footprint to achieve much more functional space, with new levels, feature steps and stone faced retaining walling. Beneath the aesthetics will be a myriad of new infrastructure, including a completely new rainwater harvesting system.

These additions are going to elevate this already wonderful home into something very special, with all of the provisions to serve this family for decades to come.
