Why have I done this?

A little bit of preparation that will never be seen once the job is finished 👀

Around this door reveal, I have a junction between timber and existing masonry.

Because these different materials can move differently over time, I didn’t want to simply apply backing plaster directly across the junction and risk future cracking.

For this repair, I’ve mechanically fixed expanded metal lath (EML) over the timber section and across the transition into the surrounding masonry.

This gives the backing coat a mechanical key and helps reinforce the area where the different materials meet.

There are different ways of dealing with this type of situation. Depending on the construction and the finish required, other methods could include using a suitable building paper behind the lath or fixing plasterboard over the area.

This is simply one method I know and use to prepare this type of junction for a plaster repair.

Once finished, none of this preparation will be visible.

But this is why good plastering isn’t just about putting plaster on a wall.

The preparation underneath is often what makes the difference. 👌

🚨 BIG NEWS… THE NEXT CHAPTER STARTS NOW! 🚨

Over the last few months, I’ve been thinking carefully about the future of Scott Beaumont Plastering and where I want to take the business.

I’m excited to announce that I’ve officially booked my advanced TIWI Cork training for August.

This is much more than just another training course it’s the first major step in the future direction of my business.

I’ve already become a accredited installer of TIWI’s internal cork insulation system, and this next stage will allow me to expand into an even wider range of internal and external cork applications, offering innovative solutions for homes and commercial buildings across Kent.

I’ve also invested in specialist spray application equipment, ready for this next stage, so once my training is complete I’ll be able to professionally apply cork systems across a much wider range of projects.

What many people don’t realise is that cork isn’t just for house walls. It can also be used on:

🏢 Commercial buildings
🚤 Boats
🚐 Mobile homes
🏕️ Summer houses & garden rooms
