Choosing a material for a vacuum formed component

The right material depends on how the finished part needs to perform.

Before we recommend a material, we look at how the component will be used, where it will be fitted, and what it needs to withstand.

That can include strength, impact resistance, heat performance, thickness, colour and surface texture.

For sectors such as aerospace, transport and manufacturing, there may also be fire, safety or certification requirements to consider.

At Donite Plastics, we can advise customers on material selection as part of the wider vacuum forming process. We look at the application, drawings and end use, then help you choose a material that suits the part and the project.

It is a practical step, but it can make a real difference to how the component performs in production and in use.

The machine that played a major part in Donite’s early vacuum forming operation

Back in the early 90s, we bought our first industrial vacuum forming machine.

Before that, much of our work was in GRP. As demand grew for higher volumes of engineering covers and panels, we needed a process that could support repeat production.

Vacuum forming gave us that.

The first machine came from a company in Manchester, where it had been used to mould suitcases. For us, it marked the start of Donite’s move into industrial vacuum forming.

A wee piece of Donite history: that machine helped us become the first company in Northern Ireland to establish us a vacuum forming company.

A lot has changed since then including the machinery; forming technology has developed, and our capabilities have grown extensively.

Today, from our base in Saintfield, County Down, we support customers across aerospace, transport and the wider industry with vacuum forming, tooling, CNC trimming, finishing, fabrication and assembly.

It started with one second-hand vacuum former.
More than 30 years later, it is a part of Donite’s story.

As a memento, we still have the nameplate of that Handwood machine.

Great to have been part of the ADS Northern Ireland Summer BBQ, with Patrick Knight and Ali Heatlie representing the team.

The event was a great chance to step away from the factory floor and into conversations about future programmes, innovation, and supply chain opportunities across aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Patrick and Ali used the time to reconnect with existing partners, make new introductions, and hear first-hand how ADS community are planning for growth.

As a thermoformed plastics specialist, we're always looking at how our materials expertise can support customers with lightweighting, sustainability, and design flexibility. Being part of the ADS NI and Invest NI wider community helps us stay close to evolving needs and collaborate on new ideas.

Thanks to ADS NI and Sumer NI for creating such a positive setting for not only good food but good conversation.

Where plastic offcuts go after CNC trimming

When a vacuum formed part is CNC trimmed, plastic is often left over from the surrounding sheet.

This can include offcuts and skeletal waste created as each part is trimmed to the right shape, size and finish.

At Donite Plastics, we manage waste as part of our production process, with a focus on reducing waste across our thermoforming and CNC trimming operations.

We also hold ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management Systems, which supports how we manage environmental responsibilities across the business.

What should you ask a thermoforming partner?

When you choose a thermoforming partner, you need to know what they can handle, how they manage quality, and what support they offer before and after forming.

A few useful questions to ask:
πŸ”΅ Can they support design, tooling, forming, trimming and assembly?
πŸ”΅ How do they manage drawings and specifications?
πŸ”΅ What quality checks do they carry out?
πŸ”΅ How do they manage repeat orders?
πŸ”΅ Which certifications do they hold?
πŸ”΅ Can they supply finished assemblies as well as individual parts?

At Donite Plastics, we support projects through design services, computer models, material specification, process choice, prototyping, vacuum forming, CNC trimming, mould and trim tooling, fabrication and assembly.

We hold AS9100D and BS EN ISO 9001:2015 certification for the design, manufacture and assembly of thermoformed products.

Yesterday, we attended Farnborough International Airshow 2026! ✈️

The event gave our team the chance to meet people from across the aerospace, aviation, space and advanced manufacturing sectors.

We spoke about our work in thermoformed plastic components, including the design, manufacture and assembly of parts for aircraft interiors and other specialist applications.

It was good to make new connections, catch up with familiar faces and start conversations about future projects.

Why does repeatability matter in thermoformed plastic parts?
Small variations in dimensions, trimming or fixing points can lead to assembly issues, wasted material and production delays.

At Donite Plastics, we manage repeatability throughout the process, from tooling and vacuum forming to CNC trimming and quality inspection.

In our latest blog, we explain how consistent production processes support part quality and outline the questions you should ask when choosing a thermoforming partner.

Thermoformed components built for agricultural machinery 🚜

At Donite Plastics, we have extensive experience designing and manufacturing thermoformed components for agricultural machinery, helping manufacturers develop strong, lightweight parts for new and existing equipment.

This expertise was reflected at this year’s Cereals event, where material choice, colour and component design remained central to the performance and appearance of agricultural machinery.

Thermoformed plastics are available in a wide range of colours and finishes and give equipment manufacturers greater flexibility when developing custom parts.

We also help businesses replace traditional metal and GRP components with thermoformed plastic alternatives suited to their production needs.

Vacuum forming offers:
πŸ”΅ Lower tooling costs than some other moulding processes
πŸ”΅ Greater scope for complex shapes and detailed designs
πŸ”΅ Strong, lightweight components
πŸ”΅ A wide choice of materials, colours and finishes
πŸ”΅ Consistent parts across production runs
πŸ”΅ Production support from prototypes through to larger batches

Our work with agricultural manufacturers gives us a clear understanding of how material choice, shape and finish affect the performance, manufacture and final appearance of equipment.
