Gas Safety Week 2026: Take No Chances

Bampton Gas are proud to support the 16th annual Gas Safety Week, which took place two weeks ago. We feel that you should Take No Chance with gas 52 weeks of the year.
Get in the know with CO

Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is highly poisonous and can be deadly. It has no smell, taste or colour, which is why it is known as the silent killer.

Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly, just as you would with a smoke alarm. Check that it is marked to the standard EN 50291, and that it is still in date where an expiry date is shown.

It is also important to know the symptoms of CO poisoning, which can include headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, turn off the gas appliance if it is safe to do so, get fresh air straight away and call the gas emergency number on 0800 111 999. If you feel unwell, seek medical attention.

Do not ignore warning signs

Take no chances if you notice anything unusual. Signs that an appliance may not be working safely can include lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out, too much condensation in a room, or error messages on the appliance’s control panel.

If you spot any of these signs, stop using the appliance and arrange for it to be checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you are a tenant, your landlord is legally responsible for arranging an annual gas safety check, providing you with a copy of the gas safety record, maintaining gas appliances, and installing carbon monoxide alarms.

Bampton Gas may be an award winning supplier of bottled Calor gas in the West Oxfordshire & Cotswolds area but we are sadly not qualified gas engineers.

However our top tip for this month as we head into autumn is to ensure that you have all of your gas appliances serviced by a suitably qualified GasSafe engineer. Please check that Carbon Monoxide and Smoke detectors where needed are installed and working. Do not leave the checking until we have cold weather because Gas Engineers are busy people and get booked up.

Don’t forget that if you rent out or loan your property, whether that be house, flat, caravan, motorhome you need a Landlords Gas Safety certificate which will be valid for one year and needs renewing each year. It can be renewed up to a month before it runs out.

If you loan out or borrow a gas appliance please ensure it is working correctly especially if you have transported it between properties. Both the owner of the equipment and the borrower have a duty of care to ensure it works correctly. If in doubt get it checked by a GasSafe engineer.

We thought we would just share with you a few pictures of things other than gas bottles and hoses that you might be lucky enough to see when you come here. Those of you that come from time to time may have seen the peachicks growing.

Peachicks fly when they are a couple of days old because they need to roost in trees to avoid foxes etc. They and the adults sleep in trees at night, only staying on the ground to nest.

So along with everything you have seen we have whatever size Calor bottle you want we have in stock together with friendly and helpful service from our knowledgeable staff.

We thought we would show you how to find us. Easiest way if using Google Maps is to enter Bampton Gas. This will then bring you to our gates. Putting the postcode in will take you to our neighbours 200 yards away, who also has gates which stay closed.

We keep our gates closed for safety reasons. There are dogs and sometimes horses roaming around, we don’t want any of them on the road.

There are also peacocks along with pea hens and chicks. You may be lucky to see the peacock displaying its tail feathers, which are moulted and regrow every year. The gates don’t stop them so you might see them on the gates or even on the verge.

Having been selling Calor for about 8 years and having a good relationship with them means we virtually always have stock of all the sizes they sell. If you want to ring us and check before coming then please do.

LPG is safe if used correctly even in this hot weather. The bottles are designed to take the increased pressure when we have hot weather. There is an over pressure release valve on the top of every bottle. If pressure goes too high then gas will be released until pressure reduces. Then it will close. For this to work correctly keep the bottle stood upright.

Check your gas hoses frequently. The hot weather can cause them to get stiff and sometimes crack sooner than expected. This can lead to leaks. If they leak then turn off all your gas bottles ask for help. If you have Calor Gas then you are welcome to call us when we are open. When we are closed call Calor’s emergency number (03457 444 999) which is manned 24 hours a day and they will offer best advice. If you believe the bottle is leaking then call Calor. If you have another make of gas then call your supplier or the makers emergency number.

Think about where you locate your BBQ, Put it in the open away from things like hedges, buildings and sheds. Keep a bucket of water nearby, just in case.
