Most organisations are approaching AI as a technology deployment challenge.
What if it's actually an organisational design challenge?

In Part 2 of his latest series, "Agents are Eating the Organisation", John Carroll, Chief Operating Officer at Joulen, explores why simply layering AI agents onto existing structures won't deliver the productivity gains many expect.

The article challenges a common assumption: technology alone doesn't transform performance. History shows that real breakthroughs happen when organisations redesign how work gets done to fully leverage new capabilities.

As AI agents move beyond individual productivity tools and become embedded in decision-making, workflows, and operations, leaders face a critical question:
Are we adapting our organisations to AI, or just asking AI to fit our existing organisations?

This week, Joulen’s COO, John Carroll, will be speaking at the Anchor High Summit by ManufacturingNI on Thursday, 28 May at Kingfisher Country Estate, Templepatrick.

In the session, Lead, Lean & Lift: Unlocking Productivity Across Business, John will explore themes from the first of his three-part thought leadership series, Agents Are Eating the Organisation.

The series examines a recurring pattern in business transformation: sustainable productivity gains rarely come from technology alone. Organisations that create lasting advantage are those willing to redesign how work is structured, how decisions are made, and how leadership operates around emerging capabilities.

From industrialisation and electrification to computing, every major technological shift has rewarded organisations prepared to rethink the operating model itself. Early evidence suggests agentic AI will be no different.

This week, we’re attending Utility Week Live at the NEC Birmingham, where our Markets and Compliance Lead, Jeremy Yapp, will join senior industry leaders at the UW Flexibility Forum roundtable to discuss: “Where is the money in flexibility?”

The session will explore how the sector can create clear, durable market signals that make flexibility commercially viable across customer segments, technologies and markets.

The roundtable will focus on where value is and isn’t materialising today, and how the industry can turn the theoretical benefits of flexibility into tangible incentives and scalable opportunities.

We look forward to sharing reflections and takeaways from across the event.

The next generation of market-leading businesses will be AI-native; operationally intelligent and built for pace, precision and scale from day one. At Joulen, that’s exactly who we are and what we’re doing.

In the first of our leadership insight series, our Chief Operating Officer John Carroll shares his perspective on operational excellence, scalable growth and why the businesses that combine AI within the foundations of their practice will define the future.

With over 15 years’ experience in high-performance consultative financial services organisations, John is helping shape the infrastructure, interoperability and efficiency required for Joulen’s continued growth across the UK and Europe.

John explores what Marc Andreessen’s famous “software is eating the world” thesis missed - the organisation itself. From Conway’s Law to productivity stagnation, John examines why AI will not simply change customer experience or automation at the edges of business but fundamentally reshape how organisations operate internally.

Innovation doesn’t always come from adding more complexity. Often, the greatest impact comes from refining the fundamentals.

Our Head of Delivery, Jaclyn Gordon, describes this through the “ice cream theory” the idea that while organisations are often drawn to the newest or most complex solutions, long-term success is built on getting the essentials right, consistently and at scale.

Earlier this year, our delivery team focused on driving greater operational efficiency and scalable ex*****on by standardising our delivery approach and implementing a unified project portfolio platform. The result was improved visibility, faster decision-making, reduced delivery friction and a consistent client experience.

Because the most valuable innovation isn’t just transformative in the moment, it creates lasting operational advantage.

“Vanilla” may sound simple, but standards, consistency, and repeatability are what enable organisations to scale with confidence and deliver extraordinary outcomes over time.

The more we strengthen the ordinary, the faster we can achieve the extraordinary.

While the weather can be unpredictable, intelligent battery optimisation is not.

This simple example shows how our PARIS platform dynamically adapts to changing weather conditions across two consecutive days to maximise energy value and efficiency.

On the first day, PARIS identified limited solar PV generation due to poor forecast conditions. In response, it strategically charged the battery overnight using low-cost off-peak electricity.

On the second day, with a significantly stronger solar generation forecast, PARIS adjusted its strategy, avoiding overnight charging and instead prioritising free on-site solar energy to charge the battery during the day.

This is intelligent flexibility in action: reducing energy costs, optimising renewable utilisation, and enabling smarter, more resilient energy systems in real time.

Battery storage is transforming the economics of C&I solar projects across Europe.

No longer a barrier to adoption, BESS is now central to project viability and the primary driver of value - delivering significant annual savings, faster payback periods and new recurring revenue opportunities.

In this insights piece, Maria Flowers (McKavanagh), Chief Revenue Officer at Joulen, explores why battery storage is essential infrastructure for commercial renewable projects and how Joulen is helping partners unlock the full revenue potential of their assets.

An excellent day one yesterday at Solar & Storage Live for the Joulen team!

There’s a noticeable shift in how quickly the market is evolving, with more sophisticated discussions around flexibility, commercial models and long-term value starting to take centre stage. We’re seeing increasing interest from international players looking to engage with the UK market, as well as explore how these models can be applied more widely.

Great to have our CEO Chris Doherty, CRO Maria Flowers (McKavanagh), and Partnerships & Business Development Lead Rishi Mehta leading these conversations.

Ready for a busy day two!

How does battery optimisation deliver value?

In our latest insights article, Liam Brannigan, Lead Data Scientist, outlines how the real value of battery optimisation lies in anticipating energy demand rather than reacting to it.

By leveraging forecasting to inform charge and discharge, battery systems can be prepared in advance of expected conditions. This shift from reactive to predictive control enables more efficient operation, improved decision-making and greater overall system value.
