Temporary Works – Where Structural Alteration Projects Are Won or Lost

Most structural alteration failures don’t happen during the cut. They happen at the temporary works interface.

Cutting concrete is predictable.

Load transfer isn’t, unless it’s engineered and managed correctly.

Common issues we see include:

• Propping design not aligned with the cutting sequence
• Incorrect assumptions about load paths
• No allowance for load redistribution during phased removal
• Limited contractor input during temporary works design

Temporary works drawings are often produced around an idealised removal sequence. But site realities, access restrictions, reinforcement clashes, programme pressures and unforeseen constraints, can quickly change the plan.

Structural Investigation at a Warehouse Facility

The project required core samples from an existing reinforced concrete slab for structural testing. However, drilling without first identifying embedded reinforcement could damage critical steel and compromise both testing and structural integrity.

Our team carried out a comprehensive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey to map reinforcement within the RC slab and determine key structural characteristics. The scan enabled precise identification of rebar locations, allowing steel-free core positions to be selected ahead of drilling.

This recent infrastructure project presented a complex challenge: reinforced concrete plinths needed to be removed while protecting the existing live pipeline above. Traditional demolition methods risked excessive vibration, disruption, and potential damage to critical infrastructure.

To overcome this, we utilised specialist wire sawing and controlled cutting techniques to achieve precise, low-vibration removal of the concrete plinths. This allowed our team to safely extract and replace the structures around the pipeline without the need for pipeline removal or service interruption.
