Ever inherited a piece of site infrastructure with zero blueprints, no maintenance history, and absolutely no clue where the pipes lead?
That’s exactly the puzzle our team at Mawdsleys Pump Services was asked to solve at one of our clients in Cheltenham.
We discovered a redundant interceptor chamber that had been stripped of its pumps years ago. There was an outgoing 2” rising main and some electrical ducting, but no onsite knowledge of where the pipe dispersed, whether it was structurally sound, or where the electrical lines entered the main building.

Instead of guessing—and risking the client the massive expense of installing a new pump into a potentially collapsed line—we took a meticulous, investigative approach:
• 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 & 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: After the tank was emptied, our specialist team secured the area, donned full PPE, and continuously monitored gas levels (maintaining a safe 20.9% oxygen level throughout).
• 𝗖𝗖𝗧𝗩 & 𝗖𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: We removed a 2” gate valve to allow our CCTV crew to trace the pipework. We successfully mapped it running 10 meters into a secondary interceptor chamber outside the workshop, before connecting seamlessly into the main sewer—completely clear of obstructions!
• 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻: Using a CAT scanner, our operative traced a mysterious rainwater stack pipe inlet right back inside the workshop.
• 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Our investigation revealed that the old electrical ducting was unviable. By identifying this early, we were able to consult with the site manager, Peter, to map out a new 15-meter electrical supply plan from the main building.

The Result? Total peace of mind for our client.
By investing in proper diagnostic work upfront, the client now has a crystal-clear picture of the project's total overhaul cost. No hidden surprises, no stumbling across costly issues mid-install. We have now accurately specified the exact submersible pump needed based on precise head and flow rates, and mapped out the new ducting requirements.

When a sump pump breaks down in a hospital, there’s no time to waste. Keeping wastewater moving is vital to keeping patient care running smoothly.

Our team at Mawdsleys Pump Services recently answered an urgent call-out to a local hospital estate after one of their main sump pumps failed.
Here is how we tackled the emergency:

Rapid Fault-Finding: Our engineer checked the pre-emptied chamber and found Pump 1 offline. Electrical testing quickly traced the issue back to a failed contactor in the control panel.

• 𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁-𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Our engineer checked the pre-emptied chamber and found Pump 1 offline. Electrical testing quickly traced the issue back to a failed contactor in the control panel.

• 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: To be 100% sure, we temporarily swapped the contactors. Pump 1 kicked into gear perfectly, proving the pump asset itself was completely healthy.

• 𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸: We set up our lifting tripod, pulled both pumps, and inspected the impellers. Both were clear of blockages and structurally sound.

• 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱: After cleaning and testing the float switches, we reseated the pumps and left the system safely operational on its automatic cycles.

The Verdict - The hospital ward is safe from flooding, and we've already scheduled a permanent contactor replacement for the next planned service to restore full duty/standby resilience.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝟰 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀. ⏱️💧

When residential water supply fails, minutes matter. Imagine being a property manager and getting a wave of urgent calls from residents stating they have zero water flow to their flats. That’s the high-pressure situation our team at Mawdsleys Pump Services responded to recently.

The suspected culprit? A blocked or failed Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV).

For multi-story residential buildings, a failed PRV doesn't just mean a minor drop in pressure—it can completely cut off the water supply to multiple homes, creating an immediate welfare issue.

Here is how our engineer turned an emergency into a resolved ticket:

𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲: We were on-site within an hour of receiving the urgent call to investigate.

𝗢𝗻-𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀: After consulting with the site contact, Derek, our engineer inspected the system and confirmed that the incoming main PRV had completely failed, choking off the building's flow.

𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: Instead of waiting days for a manufacturer's delivery, we took exact measurements, tracked down a replacement part locally, and secured it immediately.

Expert Reinstatement: We isolated the line, stripped out the failed valve, and installed the new PRV using WRAS-approved potable putty and PTFE tape to ensure a perfect, leak-free seal.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Water reintroduced, pressure fully restored to the affected flats, and zero leaks—all within a single afternoon. The site was left clean, tidy, and most importantly, with the taps running again.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴! 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘀 ☀️🏨💨

Vibration issues in an Air Handling Unit (AHU) are never a good sign. Left unchecked, they can cause catastrophic mechanical failure, severe building noise, and a complete loss of climate control.

Our team was recently called in to tackle a vibrating AHU located in a rooftop plant room. Because of the unit's position and the precision needed to fix it, a standard on-site patch repair wasn't going to cut it.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 & 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀:

• Heavy Lifting: Our team safely decommissioned the unit, extracted it from the roof, and navigated it down to ground level using specialist, tested stair-lifting equipment before transporting it back to our workshop.

• Workshop Strip & Survey: Once back in a controlled workshop environment, we stripped the unit down, replaced the bearings on both the drive and non-drive ends, and dynamically balanced the fan and motor to eliminate the vibration at its source.

• The Return Journey: With parts fully refurbished, we transported everything back to the site, utilising service lifts and stair lifters to get the components safely back up to the level 2 rooftop working area.

• Precision Rebuild: The engineers manually aligned the motor housing, fitted the rotor, installed replacement lip seals, and used a specialist 20mm stud bar to pull the fan blade perfectly onto the motor shaft.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴:

After completing the electrical reconnections, checking all tolerances, and reinstating power through the inverter, the system was turned back into auto mode—running smoothly, quietly, and entirely vibration-free.

The timing couldn't have been better. The team completed the final commissioning just as external temperatures began to soar this week, ensuring the building's occupants stayed cool when they needed it most.

During our final safety checks, we also identified a faulty emergency stop switch. True to our proactive maintenance approach, we've already logged the parts and scheduled a quick return visit to swap them out and keep the system 100% compliant.

A fantastic effort by the workshop and on-site engineering teams to execute a complex, heavy-lifting overhaul right on schedule! 👏

With unpredictable weather becoming the norm, effective stormwater management is critical for homeowners. We recently completed the installation of a brand-new stormwater pump station at a domestic property to provide the ultimate peace of mind against flooding.
Our engineers took this project from a temporary fix to a permanent, heavy-duty solution.

The Challenge:
The property was relying on a temporary setup that couldn't handle heavy downpours. We needed to install a fully automated, professional-grade dual-pump system within a tight sump, while routing power and control cables cleanly into the house without disrupting the interior aesthetics.

The Solution:
Precision Engineering: After clearing out the residual water and wet-vacuuming the sump, the team core-drilled a clean route from the outside, through the door threshold and cavity walls, to lay a hidden 2-inch cable duct.
Heavy-Duty Setup: We assembled and positioned the new pumps, complete with non-return valves, and seamlessly connected them to the property’s existing 50 mm MDPE outlet pipe.
Smart Controls: Custom float brackets were mounted using stainless steel hardware to set the precise activation levels. The cables were neatly routed through interior radiator boxing into the utility room.
Smart Panel Commissioning: A dedicated control panel was mounted at eye level, wired up, and the overloads were tuned precisely to 3.5A to match the pump ratings.

The Result:
We fully tested the system, confirming that the duty-cyclic operation, assist mode, and high-level alarms all performed perfectly, rapidly dropping water levels. We then demonstrated the operation to the delighted homeowner, showing them exactly how this new system will automatically safeguard their home.
The site was left completely spotless, and the client was so thrilled with the team's professionalism and neat work that she’s already promised us a fantastic review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
