Some of the team had a great time last week at the Scottish Lime Centre Trust. Undertaking a 2-day bespoke practical training course developed in collaboration with their specialist team. The training focused on deepening the teams understanding on the use and performance of lime mortar, as well as the varying application methods used on traditional buildings.

Our head mason has been busy carving this beautiful stone cross which will sit proudly atop of St Wilfrid's Chapel in Penrith. Designed by Crosby Granger Architects in keeping with the chapel's existing features and historic records, this Locharbriggs sandstone cross will be a prominent feature to the Grade II* Listed chapel for The Churches Conservation Trust.

This week some of our masons are out at Grade I Listed Stonyhurst College in the Ribble Valley. After undertaking a condition survey to an area of roof finials, we have been asked to carry out structural repairs and replacements to the Lower Pendle Millstone Grit sandstone finials within one of the courtyards.
Stone supplied locally from the Leeming Quarry.

Our conservation team have been making great progress on the field trial works at the historic River Elwy Bridge in Denbighshire, helping to develop the most effective long-term treatment for this important heritage structure. The trial is part of a program of investigations into salt-related deterioration affecting the bridge's sandstone arch barrels.

We previously completed a thorough brushing and vacuuming of the bridge barrel soffit, followed by Thermatech cleaning to remove surface salts and friable material while opening the stone's surface pores in preparation for treatment.

With the surface fully prepared, last week our team applied the first coat of 'Westox Cocoon' sacrificial poultice to the arch barrel intrados. This specialist material is designed to draw harmful salts from deep within the masonry. The poultice will remain in place for a minimum of 14 days before being carefully removed, after which a second application will be carried out.

It's a pleasure to be involved in innovative conservation techniques that will help inform the future preservation of this remarkable bridge, and we're proud to be working alongside the wider project team on this important heritage asset.

Phil looks at the Wildlife tower we constructed 2 years ago. We now have a hive of wildlife in the there Barn Owls, Bats and Birds. The Barn owl tower stands 15ft tall and constructed from stone masonry.
The barn owl pellets show the owls eating rodents, mice and other animal.
