The transition from prototype to production is where problems often appear, especially for SMEs.

Where?

Constraints - Full production is not forgiving so elegant parts might be a nightmare to make or assemble.
Our advice? design for manufacture from the start.

Material selection - Exotic alloys are fine until you find a long lead time and large MOQ.
Our advice? Fit the material to the function.

Tolerances - Incorrect tolerances cause problems - either with function, or with price.
Our advice? Focus on where tolerances impact performance.

Did you know the Soviet Union once reverse engineered an entire American bomber?

In 1944, several American B-29 bombers made emergency landings in Soviet territory. Rather than return the aircraft, the Soviets set about recreating one of the most advanced bombers of its time.

Their engineers dismantled and studied the aircraft, producing around 105,000 technical drawings and, ultimately, creating their own version.

The result was the Tupolev Tu-4, which first flew in 1947 (looking remarkably similar to the original B-29).

It's a supersized example of reverse engineering but demonstrates just how much can be learned from an existing product.

Thankfully, most reverse engineering projects don't involve an entire aircraft!

For us, reverse engineering is part of our expertise and typically used by clients to recreate out-of-stock parts, or help them better understand existing components for further development.

Bentley has become the latest major manufacturer to back UK production, announcing a £350 million investment at its Crewe site, where its new electric Torcal SUV will be built.

That announcement follows investment news of £500 million from McLaren and £170 million from Nissan - in a single week.

For those of us working in UK engineering, it's a very welcome show of confidence in UK skills, UK technology and UK manufacturing capability.

The automotive industry has always been an important showcase for British engineering expertise.

Investment on this scale into the sector is a welcome statement on its future.

WHERE something is made could soon have an even bigger impact on what it costs.

FleetPoint magazine reports that European carmakers have called for a delay to tougher UK/EU rules of origin for EVs (currently due to come in January 2027).

The issue is that vehicles will need to contain a greater proportion of UK/EU produced content to qualify for tariff-free trade.

It highlights the engineering supply chain behind a finished EV and shows the risk of global volatility on tariffs and regulations.

Building greater capability closer to home requires the engineering expertise, capacity and suppliers needed throughout the supply chain.

The automotive industry needs to tap in to agile, UK-based manufacturing companies like ours, because local sourcing will help them avoid global volatility.

Are the latest SMMT EV stats good news or not?

Electric vans have just hit a record 16.3% of the UK LCV registrations.

Registrations rose by almost 26% compared with August last year.

But...

In the 1st 8 months of 2026, they accounted for 11% of registrations - vs the 24% Government target under their ZEV Mandate.

Businesses need vehicles that can reliably complete the job required of them, day after day.

Our focus in the sector is on providing vehicles that meet the needs of their role - engineered solutions for EVs.

The wider challenge on Government is creating the infrastructure, economics and regulatory environment to increase adoption.

The Government's proposed plans to reduce the 2030 ZEV target come with a price tag.

The Government are consulting on a proposed reduction from 80% to 50% electric vehicles.

It has been welcomed by some who argue that the current targets don't reflect consumer demand - but others think that it will delay crucial EV infrastructure investment.

According to BEAMA's recent analysis it could result in:
- 1.7 million fewer home charge point installations by 2034,
- £1.56 billion in delayed revenue,
- 12GW of lost flexible grid capacity, and
- 71 million additional tonnes of lifetime CO2 emissions.

That's a major impact on the sector with far-reaching consequences for the entire EV supply chain - including the engineering businesses responsible for the drivetrains that make this transition possible.

Which way will electric commercial vehicles go, BIG or small?

The stats are interesting:

In 2025, 587 new zero-emission HGVs were registered in the UK, up more than 170% on the previous year.

That sounds impressive, but those vehicles still represented just 1.4% of the new HGV market.

At the other end, smaller electric commercial vehicles are already being adopted in much greater numbers.

More than 30,000 battery electric vans were registered during 2025, up 36.2% year-on-year, although they still accounted for only 9.5% of the van market.

So where does the real opportunity lie?

It’s an interesting question for us at DEE because we’ve worked on niche EV drivetrain and vehicle engineering projects which started with the final need, rather than simply electrifying an existing vehicle.

Will battery and charging tech make large electric HGVs a practical choice for long-distance freight?

Or will we see more lightweight and nimble EVs?

£130 million is being invested into the next generation of UK automotive electrification - but this is about more than vehicle manufacturers.

The Government’s DRIVE35 programme is specifically focused on strengthening the wider UK automotive supply chain, increasing manufacturing capability and helping ZEV technologies move towards production at scale.

That wider recognition from the Government is key because we know only too well that every new EV component has to go from concept to reality, and that brings specialised challenges.

But they're just the kind of challenges we love.

We take projects from concept design and prototype development through to detailed engineering, component manufacture and low-volume assembly - bringing EV concepts to life.

The investment may be headline news for the automotive sector, but we're delighted to see recognition of the importance of the WHOLE EV supply chain.

How hot will it be in 30 years?

It sounds like a question for a climate scientist, but it’s becoming a question engineers need to consider too.

With record temperatures causing problems across European railways, Eurostar has reportedly upgraded the specification for its new trains (due to enter service from 203) so they can operate in temperatures of up to 55°C (up 10 degrees from current spec).

These trains are expected to have a working life of around 30 years, and the conditions they experience towards the end of that life could look very different from those they experience at the beginning.

It’s an interesting example of something engineers constantly have to consider - not only what conditions a product needs to withstand today, but what might reasonably be asked of it tomorrow?

When we design a product, we always consider the future needs, not just what the client's asking of us today.
