£130 million is being invested into the next generation of UK automotive electrification - but this is about more than vehicle manufacturers.

The Government’s DRIVE35 programme is specifically focused on strengthening the wider UK automotive supply chain, increasing manufacturing capability and helping ZEV technologies move towards production at scale.

That wider recognition from the Government is key because we know only too well that every new EV component has to go from concept to reality, and that brings specialised challenges.

But they're just the kind of challenges we love.

We take projects from concept design and prototype development through to detailed engineering, component manufacture and low-volume assembly - bringing EV concepts to life.

The investment may be headline news for the automotive sector, but we're delighted to see recognition of the importance of the WHOLE EV supply chain.

What do you think?
Good news for UK Manufacturing?

How hot will it be in 30 years?

It sounds like a question for a climate scientist, but it’s becoming a question engineers need to consider too.

With record temperatures causing problems across European railways, Eurostar has reportedly upgraded the specification for its new trains (due to enter service from 203) so they can operate in temperatures of up to 55°C (up 10 degrees from current spec).

These trains are expected to have a working life of around 30 years, and the conditions they experience towards the end of that life could look very different from those they experience at the beginning.

It’s an interesting example of something engineers constantly have to consider - not only what conditions a product needs to withstand today, but what might reasonably be asked of it tomorrow?

When we design a product, we always consider the future needs, not just what the client's asking of us today.

The latest AA figures reveal an increase of 46% in UK private EV ownership over the past year - but we think the really impressive stuff sits behind that stat.

Every electric vehicle on the road started life as a concept.

Before the first production model rolled off the line, someone had to solve hundreds of engineering challenges.

How do you reduce weight without compromising strength? How do you package components into increasingly tight spaces? How do you improve efficiency and simplify manufacturing?

Those questions are answered on engineers' screens, in workshops, during prototype builds and countless design reviews... and as EV adoption grows, the demand for specialist engineering expertise grows with it.

We've been active in the EV engineering sector for years, bridging the gap between ideas and production-ready solutions.

The public sees the finished product, but we see the engineering that gets it there.

We're ready.

Getting a part to look right is one thing.
Getting it to perform reliably in the real world is another.

Every day, we turn concepts into components - and the drawing stage is critical.

Tolerances, finishes, dimensions and materials all get established - and the detailed drawing stage is where experience really matters.

Because for EV drivetrains, motorsport parts and low-volume specialist builds, there’s no room for guesswork.

Which do you need when you're working on a niche engineering project?

You don't need A, B, or C.

You need all 3.

You need:
🧢 Someone to create like a designer - matching form and function while thinking outside of the box.

🧢 The person that sees the world like an engineer - solving problems quickly.

🧢 A deep knowledge of the manufacturing process - knowing what will work in the real world in production.

That’s how we work - A rounded approach in a small, multi-skilled and focused team.

For clients, that approach means fewer delays, smarter designs and solutions that just work.

Get in touch and we'll get to work on your engineering challenge.

A successful engineering project requires a combination of 2 very different things.

It takes...
⚙️ Knowledge and experience.
Knowing what will work, seeing quickly what won't.
Identifying practical solutions to problems based on years of prior work.

But it also needs...
⚙️ Creativity and innovation.
Out of the box thinking to consider different approaches and new solutions - a recognition that each project has its own quirks.

That combination is something were proud to have.

From EV drivetrains to niche component builds, every new product requires a diverse range of skillsets that complement each other and people who work as one.

Got something in mind?
We’d love to hear it.

Citroen are to bring back the 2CV as an EV in 2028.

The new electric 2CV has been announced with a target price under £15,000, with a target weight somewhere between 750 and 900kg (which, for an EV, would be impressive).

This is what caught our eye as engineers - creating an affordable and lightweight EV is probably harder than engineering an expensive one.

Every feature added like a bigger battery, powered seats, or a larger screen pushes the price up and the range down.

We understand only too well that lightweight EV engineering means making deliberate choices and balancing everything - cost, performance, user experience and styling.

The brief becomes "What does this vehicle need to do, at what price point, and what can be tweaked without compromising either of those things?

That's a tougher challenge than just "make it fast."

The original 2CV was a lesson engineering to a constraint - we know the electric version will need to be too and we look forward to seeing how they get on.

The SMMT posted a huge number last month - £4.6 billion.

That's the boost to UK domestic manufacturing available by 2030, if the industry moves fast enough to capture it.

Demand for UK-sourced automotive parts is projected to rise by 80%.

And demand specifically for electric motors, power electronics and drive systems is forecast to be up more than 350% by the end of the decade.

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes was clear about it:
"We have the skills, the innovation and the industrial base built on the billions already invested into Britain by global brands."

The opportunity is real, but the question is which engineering businesses are positioned to deliver it...

We believe it will be the ones who are already developing EV drivetrains, prototyping components, and moving programmes from concept to production.

We're one of those very businesses.

The manufacturers who succeed will be partnering with UK-based companies to tap into the knowledge we've built over years.

If you're working on EV or advanced automotive projects and want an experienced UK engineering partner, let's talk.

The UK ZEV mandate requires 80% of new cars sold to be zero emission by 2030 - a target that is now four years away.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, recently said "I do not know of anyone in the industry who thinks we will get to 80% of ZEVs by 2030."

The mandate hasn't changed but the assumptions it was built on have.

Battery costs are running around 30% higher than 2021 projections and industrial energy costs are up 80%. The engineering challenge was always going to be hard, but the commercial reality has made it harder.

The important work now is solving the real engineering problems, drivetrain efficiency, thermal management, platform cost reduction - not waiting for the market to sort itself out.

We work with businesses across the EV sector to help solve exactly these problems.

For larger organisations, we can support development programmes without touching the main production process, slotting in as a specialist resource alongside existing teams.

For smaller businesses, we bring decades of EV engineering experience they can draw on without having to build it themselves.

The mandate may be under review according to the SMMT, but the engineering work isn't going anywhere.

Get in touch with us today for support.

In engineering, the same mistake costs very different amounts depending on when you catch it.

Spot an issue during a feasibility study? It's a conversation and a revised drawing.

Catch it in simulation? It's a few hours of analysis and a model update.

Find it in a physical prototype? It's rework and lost time, but still recoverable.

But discover it in production?

Now you're looking at scrapped tooling, delayed programmes and the kind of costs that nobody budgeted for.

That's where feasibility studies and planning are key.

We always invest time at the front end of every project, asking the hard questions early, running the analysis before anything is built and testing assumptions before they become expensive commitments.

If you're at the start of a project and want a team who'll help you get the important decisions right early, drop us a message.
