Work experience is a valuable opportunity for young people to explore their interests, develop new skills and gain confidence in a professional environment.

Recently, we welcomed Maja to JPP for a work experience placement with our Business Support team, giving her the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the world of marketing and business communications.

Here’s what Maja had to say about her experience:

“Spending the day with the JPP Business Support team has been an amazing experience. Making social media posts might seem easy as an individual, but when a business trusts you to design and write content that professionally represents them, it gives you a real sense of confidence.

The staff at JPP have made me feel so welcome. I’m currently writing my personal statement, and having practical experience that demonstrates my passion for marketing will be a massive help.”

ENGINEERING AROUND CHALLENGING GROUND CONDITIONS

Every site tells a different story.

Ground conditions can have a major impact on:

• Foundation solutions
• Earthworks
• Site levels
• Construction methods
• Drainage
• Project costs

At Arnold Lane, JPP encountered areas of made ground up to 10m deep.

Rather than treating this simply as a problem, our engineers worked with the geotechnical team to develop a coordinated solution. The result included detailed cut-and-fill design, staged excavation, ground improvement and material reuse.

Understanding what's beneath the site can be just as important as understanding what's being built on top of it.

At JPP, we believe work experience is a valuable opportunity for young people to explore potential career paths, develop new skills and gain an insight into the world of work.

Last week, we welcomed Casper Burn, who spent his work experience placement with our Civil & Structural Engineering and Development Planning teams.

During his time with us, Casper had the opportunity to explore engineering design, gain hands-on experience using CAD software and discover how engineers plan and design projects before construction begins.

Casper shared his favourite part of the placement:

“I enjoyed designing things in CAD because it was fun to see how people plan before they build.”

Throughout the week, Casper impressed the team with his positive attitude and enthusiasm. He produced 3D models, completed his work to a good standard, stayed engaged and asked thoughtful questions.

He also demonstrated strong communication and organisational skills, making a positive contribution throughout his placement.

Experiences like Casper’s highlight the importance of giving young people the opportunity to discover engineering, develop practical skills and see how classroom learning connects to real-world projects.

A big thank you to Casper for spending the week with us, and to our Civil & Structural Engineering and Development Planning teams for sharing their knowledge and supporting the next generation of engineers.

Whether you’re planning an extension, starting a new build, or just want to feel more confident about the Party Wall process, our guide will give you everything you need to move forward with clarity and peace of mind.

🔹 Part 4 - Party Wall Notices

A Party Wall Notice is a formal written notice served under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. It informs your neighbour (the “adjoining owner”) that you intend to carry out certain works that affect a shared wall/structure, a boundary, or nearby foundations.

The purpose is to give your neighbour fair warning, legal clarity, and a chance to consent or appoint a surveyor if they’re concerned.

Did you know that there are three core notice types?

🔹 Section 1 — Line of Junction: for building a new wall (building or party fence wall) at the boundary or astride it.

🔹 Section 2 — Party Structure (works to a shared wall/structure): e.g., cutting into a party wall to insert steel beams for a loft, raising or underpinning the party wall, or demolishing and rebuilding a party structure.

🔹 Section 6 — Adjacent Excavation (nearby foundations): excavating to a certain depth within 3m or 6m of your neighbour’s structure, depending on depth and footing geometry.

Recently, our Associate Director Caitlin Turley delivered a CPD session exploring Transport Planning and the Decide and Provide Approach. Here Caitlin shares what a transport planner actually does.

🔹 What does a Transport Planner actually do? 🔹

Transport planning is about much more than looking at traffic.

From the earliest stages of a development, transport planning can help unlock sites, assess feasibility and inform
how a development is designed.

At JPP, our transport planning expertise can help address a wide range of considerations, including:

• Safe access to development sites
• Masterplanning and development layouts
• Swept paths and visibility
• Car and cycle parking
• Walking and cycling infrastructure
• Public transport provision
• Trip generation and distribution
• The capacity of the local highway network

Getting transport considerations involved early can help ensure that movement, accessibility and connectivity are
considered alongside the wider development proposals.

This was one of the key themes explored by our Associate Director, Caitlin Turley, in her recent CPD session on

We are delighted to welcome George Haynes to The JPP Group.

George joined our Whilton Locks office in September, taking on the role of Trainee Technician within our Civils team.

When the ground presents a challenge, engineering has to adapt.

Arnold Lane is a 1,000-unit mixed-use development comprising residential dwellings and commercial space.

One of the major engineering challenges was the site's ground conditions, with areas of made ground reaching depths of up to 10 metres. JPP worked closely with the client, geotechnical consultant and engineering teams to develop cost-efficient solutions.

Our detailed cut-and-fill package became a bulk earthworks tender package and included:

Staged excavation works
Removal and burial of made ground
High Energy Impact Compaction
Innovative reuse of surplus organic material
Foundation solutions designed around the ground conditions

The approach helped reduce the requirement to remove material from site while developing a more economical foundation solution.

Good engineering isn't always about doing more.

Sometimes it's about finding a smarter way to do it.

WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE CONSTRUCTION?

Before the first foundation is dug, there is a huge amount of engineering work to do.
At JPP, that can start with understanding the site's constraints and testing whether a proposed
development is technically feasible.

Introducing our Transport Planning CPD series - at The JPP Group, we believe that sharing knowledge is an important part of supporting the wider industry.

Recently, our Associate Director Caitlin Turley delivered a CPD session exploring Transport Planning and the Decide and Provide Approach.

The session looked at some of the key considerations that can influence development from the earliest stages from site feasibility and access, through to masterplanning, active travel, connectivity and the assessment of the local highway network.

It also explored some of the approaches and tools being used within modern transport planning, including the Vision-Led Approach, Decide and Provide, Active Travel England and the DfT Connectivity Tool.

In light of the recent NPPF updates and focus on Vision-led planning and sustainable development, over the next six weeks, we'll be sharing some of the key themes from Caitlin's CPD, breaking down the subject into practical insights for our clients.

Our aim isn't simply to share what we know, but to encourage discussion around how transport planning can contribute to creating better-connected and more sustainable developments.
