👷 PROJECT UPDATE | WOOL GARDENS, CREWKERNE

Our team continues to make excellent progress on this major residential project for Taylor Wimpey.

Having completed the Section 278 works on Station Road, we have now started the much-anticipated highway improvements on Yeovil Road—another important milestone for the development.

Across the wider site, work is progressing well and remains on schedule. Our extensive scope includes:

➡️ 109 plots
➡️ 150,000m³ of earthworks
➡️ 20,000m² of roads
➡️ 9,000m² of footpaths
➡️ 5,500m of drainage
➡️ Culverts and mammal crossings
➡️ Pump station and rising main connection
➡️ Two Section 278 junctions
➡️ Multiple attenuation ponds

A huge shout-out to the team at Ground Stabilisation Solutions (GSS), who have supported us with the stabilisation and reuse of approximately 40,000m³ of site-won material.

By treating the material with lime and cement, it has been strengthened and reused to construct the new carriageway embankment and provide a capping replacement beneath the highway.

This approach has significantly reduced waste, the need for imported aggregates and associated haulage movements—helping to lower the project’s overall environmental impact.

10 year Anniversary 🎉

A huge congratulations to James Portfleet, who recently celebrated his 10-year anniversary with Champion Groundworks.‍

James joined us as an apprentice in 2016 after deciding to take his career in a completely new direction—and we’re incredibly proud that, a decade later, he remains such a valued member of our team.‍

Over the years, James has developed a wealth of experience across plot drainage and externals and is now growing his expertise in road drainage at our Landkey project in Barnstaple. He's also gained an impressive range of qualifications and tickets with Champion alongt the way.‍

Having started his own journey with us as an apprentice, James particularly enjoys supporting those following in his footsteps. He understands the experience from their perspective and is always happy to share his knowledge and help them develop.‍

Thank you for your loyalty, hard work and everything you have contributed over the past decade James and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones with you in the future.

Project Update | Lympstone, Devon 🏘️

Take a look at these recent photos of the progress our team is making for 3West Group at Lympstone, Devon.

The scheme will deliver 42 thoughtfully designed three-, four- and five-bedroom homes, including a selection of larger properties extending beyond 3,500 sq ft. It will also provide 14 affordable homes and areas of public open space, helping to support the needs of the local community.

Work is progressing well, with all roads now in place, the attenuation pond installed and both drainage outfalls established. We also handed back the role of Principal Contractor to 3West Group at the beginning of August.

A huge congratulations to Cameron Evans, who has successfully completed his Groundworks Apprenticeship with Champion Groundworks.

Since joining us in 2024, Cameron has gained valuable experience across four Champion projects, developing his skills in everything from plot drainage to finishing works and we're delighted to have him now join us as a permanent member of the team.

New arrivals 😀

We were delighted to recently welcome two brand-new additions to our fleet—a Kubota KX41-3 1.5-tonne excavator and a Kubota KX060-5 5-tonne excavator.

While our larger machines often attract the most attention, smaller equipment is just as important. Compact, versatile and easy to manoeuvre, these machines enable our teams to work safely and efficiently in confined areas across our sites.

Behind every successful Champion project is a diverse team of people working hard in the background to keep our business moving. Our new 'Meet Team Champion' series is lifting the curtain on some of these roles and introducing the people who make an important contribution every day—often behind the scenes, but always central to our success.

This week, we’re heading behind the scenes at our purpose-built workshop in Liskeard to meet Darren Wilton, our Workshop Manager.

With almost 35 years of experience—and 12 years as part of Team Champion—Darren helps ensure our fleet of more than 250 vehicles remains safe, reliable and ready for the road.

From his unwavering commitment to the safety of our teams to his restoration of a very special piece of Champion history, Darren’s story is one we’re proud to share.

Project Update | Pandarosa, Bodmin 🏘️

We recently shared that work was underway on a new development for our valued client, Wain Homes, at Panderosa in Bodmin.

Located near the hospital, the development will deliver a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, alongside new amenity space and key infrastructure improvements for the local area.

Our team is making excellent progress during the early stages of the project. The site has now been stripped, the soakaway tank installed and backfilled, and work has begun to form the site compound ahead of Wain Homes becoming the principal contractor.

Construction of the adopted drainage and roads is also underway, alongside the Section 278 works.

Lucas first joined our team as a labourer with no previous groundworks experience and has since progressed to recently taken on his first Site Manager role—a fantastic achievement that reflects his hard work and dedication during his time with us so far.

Project Update: Barne Barton, Plymouth 👷

Our team are making great progress on phase two of this major regeneration scheme for Lovell Partnerships, which in total will deliver 204 affordable homes, transforming a former naval accommodation site into a modern, 100% affordable mixed-tenure community.

So far for phase 2, we’ve completed foundations for fifteen plots, substructures for nine plots and installed 113m of reinforced concrete walls.

Inspiring the next generation 👷‍♂️

We recently welcomed Year 10 students Cian Davis and Harry Allen to Champion Groundworks for a week of work experience.

They spent the week learning about the groundworks and construction industry, meeting our team and discovering the wide range of careers available.

Supporting young people as they begin to consider their future careers is incredibly important to us. Work experience provides a valuable introduction to the workplace and allows students to explore the wide variety of opportunities available within construction—from practical site-based roles to careers in engineering, commercial management, health and safety, administration and many other areas.‍

We're extremely proud that several members of our team, including members of our leadership team, first joined Champion for work experience while they were in Year 10 before going on to build successful careers with us. We therefore know first-hand the lasting impact these hands-on opportunities can have and how they can help shape a young person’s future.‍

Cian and Harry approached every opportunity with enthusiasm and made a great impression. Thank you to everyone on the team who helped make their week such a positive experience!
