🐋 Sightings of the Week | Ghana

We’re kicking off a new series showcasing some of the incredible marine mammal sightings captured by our teams in the field.

This week, we’re heading to Ghana with our Junior Project Manager Jessica Smith. These fantastic photographs were captured by the project’s Marine Mammal Observer, Callen Clokie, and show a humpback whale during what is currently peak season for the species in Ghana.

It’s also a particularly special time of year, with plenty of calves being spotted alongside their mothers.

Keep an eye out for more Sightings of the Week from our teams around the world.

What’s in a name?

Seiche isn’t always the easiest name to pronounce, but there’s a reason it has been part of our identity for 30 years.

Pronounced ‘Saysh’, the name comes from a natural movement of water known as a seiche, a series of standing waves in an enclosed or partially enclosed body of water.

For a company built around understanding our oceans, it feels particularly fitting.

Since 1996, our work has centred around understanding what’s happening beneath the surface, combining marine technology, underwater acoustics and environmental expertise to help our clients listen, detect and understand.

Sound. Movement. Life.

Three things at the heart of our oceans, and at the heart of Seiche.

Introducing Seiche’s new Marine Science & Technology Department.

We’re excited to introduce the next chapter of marine science at Seiche, bringing together specialist expertise in marine ecology, underwater acoustics, passive acoustic monitoring, data analytics and technology innovation within our new Marine Science & Technology Department.

Our multidisciplinary team combines extensive offshore field experience with expertise in marine mammal surveys, underwater noise characterisation, acoustic propagation and source-level modelling, soundscape assessment, bioacoustics and marine mammal consultancy.

Leading key areas of the department are Lorenzo Scala, Chris Pierpoint and Robert Lee

🔷Lorenzo Scala, Head of Marine Science

A Chartered Marine Scientist and Fellow of IMarEST, Lorenzo brings over 18 years of experience in passive acoustic monitoring, marine mammal monitoring and underwater noise assessment across the offshore industry.

Lorenzo will lead our team of acousticians and marine mammal specialists, providing technical leadership and oversight across offshore surveys, strengthening scientific quality and ensuring projects are delivered robustly, efficiently and to budget.

“I’m excited to take on the role of Head of Marine Science and lead a talented team of marine mammal and acoustic specialists. My focus will be on combining strong science, innovative technology and practical offshore experience to deliver high-quality marine environmental solutions that support the continued growth of the business.”

🔷Chris Pierpoint, Head of Bioacoustics

Chris is a marine mammal biologist with extensive experience in the use of PAM to gain insights into the ecology of whales, dolphins, sirenians and seals.

Chris leads our analysis of marine mammal acoustic data and contributes to the development of new PAM technology to record the vocalisations of these species. He is currently involved in baseline surveys and density estimation for harbour porpoises in the UK North Sea and Australian humpback dolphins in West Papua, Indonesia.

🔷Robert Lee, Head of Technical Innovation

In his new role, Robert will spearhead Seiche’s next generation of hardware and software development for the environmental sector. His focus will be on bringing together advanced acoustics, intelligent automation and adaptable monitoring platforms to create practical new capabilities for Seiche and its customers.

“It is an incredibly exciting time to help shape Seiche’s next chapter. We have some fantastic engineering expertise within the business and a real opportunity to turn ambitious ideas into effective, field-ready systems.”

Together, the new department strengthens Seiche’s scientific and technical capability and brings marine science, offshore experience and technology development even closer together.

Science-led. Technology-enabled. Built for the future of offshore energy.

🔷 Recognising expertise within Seiche

Recently, our Marine Mammal & Offshore Technical Lead, Lorenzo Scala, was recognised as a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), one of the Institute’s highest levels of professional recognition.

Lorenzo’s involvement with IMarEST goes much further than his Fellowship. He sits on the committee of its Marine Mammal Special Interest Group and has contributed to science communication articles, mentoring initiatives and a DEFRA-funded project reviewing marine mammal monitoring technology and innovation.

He has also written about Passive Acoustic Monitoring for the The Marine Mammal Observer Association (MMOA), guest lectured and delivered career development workshops for marine science graduates.

For Lorenzo, sharing that knowledge is an important part of working within the industry:

“Throughout my career, I’ve valued the opportunity to engage with aspiring and early-career marine professionals. My involvement with IMarEST has given me a platform to support outreach and engagement, helping to bridge the gap between research, industry, and the public. Science communication plays an important role in fostering collaboration and inspiring the next generation of marine scientists.”

Lorenzo is one of a number of people across Seiche actively involved with professional institutions, technical groups, and the wider marine science community. We’re proud to have that level of expertise within the business and to see our people contributing their knowledge beyond the work we deliver for our clients.

Congratulations again, Lorenzo.
