Celebrating World Ocean Day 🐳

This year’s theme, “Strong Marine Protected Areas for our Blue Planet”, highlights the importance of protecting not only what we can see beneath the surface, but also what we can hear.

Healthy oceans depend on balanced soundscapes. From communication and navigation to feeding and migration, many marine species rely on sound to survive. That’s why acoustic monitoring plays such an important role in understanding and reducing the impact of human activity offshore.

At Seiche, our work supports the monitoring and management of underwater noise, to better understand environmental impacts and contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems and the species that depend on them.

To mark World Ocean Day, we're sharing a live underwater listening station from Little Belt, Denmark. The hydrophone stream offers a unique opportunity to experience the sounds of the marine environment and highlights how acoustic monitoring can help us better understand and protect our oceans.

Seiche is proud to be leading a pioneering pilot study, commissioned by Defra, to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed underwater noise limits from offshore pile driving during wind farm construction.

Working alongside SAMS Enterprise, SMRU Consulting and TNO, the programme is being delivered across major UK offshore wind developments, including RWE’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm and ScottishPower Renewables’ East Anglia THREE. The study is evaluating real-world noise reduction performance using advanced monitoring technologies, including autonomous underwater recorders and porpoise click detectors.

Key aims of the programme include:

• Assessing the effectiveness of underwater noise abatement technologies in operational conditions
• Testing the practicality of proposed underwater noise limits
• Improving understanding of marine mammal responses to construction noise
• Capturing operational insights from noise abatement deployment in UK waters
• Informing future policy and environmental management approaches

By combining field data from multiple offshore wind projects, this work will help build a more robust scientific understanding of underwater noise impacts and support the sustainable expansion of offshore wind in the UK.

This initiative forms part of the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change programme, led by The Crown Estate in partnership with DESNZ and Defra.

As Seiche CEO Roy Wyatt notes, this collaboration demonstrates what is possible when industry and science work together to ensure offshore wind expansion is underpinned by robust evidence and effective marine protection.

“After living for nearly 100 years on this planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea. If we save the sea, we save our world.”

Wishing Sir David Attenborough many happy returns as he celebrates his 100th birthday today.

Through his storytelling, curiosity and commitment to conservation, he has inspired generations to better understand, appreciate and protect our planet and oceans.
