What actually is riving? Riving is the traditional process of splitting slate along its natural grain using hand tools and skill passed down through generations before us.

It’s a craft that relies on patience, precision, and understanding of the material your working with. This is something we still practice here at Honister today.

Craftsmanship is more than just skill, for us it’s generations of knowledge, pride and tradition being passed from one person to the next.

Every piece of slate and every technique carries a story shaped by the people who have worked these fells for decades. We’re proud to celebrate the craftsmanship that continues to live on here at England’s last working slate mine, keeping these traditions alive for future generations.

Riving is the traditional craft of splitting slate along its natural layers to create strong, durable roofing slate.

Used for centuries across the UK this skilled technique relies on understanding the slates natural grain rather than cutting against it. Each piece is carefully split by hand, making every slate unique while preserving the character and strength that has made slate roofing so timeless throughout generations.

Today, it remains an important part of our heritage here at Honister Slate Mine!

A fantastic day welcoming Charlotte, Grace & Alice from to Honister this week.

It’s always inspiring to see creatives experience Honister Slate firsthand, explore the mine, and connect with the craftsmanship and heritage behind our slate. Their passion for natural materials was contagious, and we can’t wait to see what ideas come from their visit ✨
