Audio Engineering Society Copenhagen, Day 3 - and what a way to finish.

As we prepared to bid farewell to Copenhagen after a packed and stimulating three days, our last day included a fascinating paper by Dr Thomas McKenzie of the University of Edinburgh analysing guitar string ageing and exploring potential techniques to simulate or eliminate these effects using real-time DSP.

This was followed by a lecture by four true audio recording and mastering experts, titled 'What are you doing with that compressor?!'. Margaret Luthar, Stefan Bock, Richard King, and the renowned George Massenburg walked us through the key parameters and variables, with practical tips and go-tos for different project, client, and engineer use cases, including reflections on how changing consumer media loudness rules are impacting best practices in sound engineering. Needless to say, ideas on how to manage Threshold, Ratio and gain, along side the general issue of “crushing mixes” were hot topics across applications including immersive mixing, vinyl cutting and music recording.

In the afternoon, the education section held its closing Awards Ceremony, with prizes for the Student Recording Competition and the Student Design Competition. The SDC overall gold winner was Stefan Baumgartner, from the Kunstuni Graz KUG in Graz, for his Double Helix velocity-sensitive music control and MIDI computer keyboard which the judges felt was strong in both innovation and on design for manufacturer. We awarded our own Interfacio Go To Market Mentoring Prize to David Wieland from ETH Zürich for his 'Polymap' 64-channel polyphonic guitar pickup system who delivered a engaging presentation of a well-developed and conceived design with some carefully considered commercial potential. Congratulations to all the entrants and winners.

In the words of Brecht De Man, AES President: AES uniquely brings together research, education and industry, and we felt that this year's convention was a perfect illustration of how this works and why it is so important for the future of audio. Thanks to Christoph Thompson, Ian Corbett, and Jesper Andersen for your support and some of the photos.

A superb few days in Denmark only slightly marred by the 2-3 hour queues at passport control for all of us non-EU visitors when we tried to leave ;-)

Day 2 at the Audio Engineering Society convention in Copenhagen at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet - DTU and Richard Wear and Connor Booth were in full working mode 🎧

The morning kicked off with some serious geeking out - getting some cool headphone immersive room simulation with Brandenburg Labs and learning about the latest in multiphysics modelling from COMSOL.

In the afternoon we took on our 'ex-officio' judging role at the Saul Walker Design Competition. The standard of the designs and presentations was high, making our final decision a difficult one and we were kept on our mental toes assesses aspects including Design, Communication, Presentation, Motivation, Vision and Commercial. The winner of the Interfacio Go-To-Market Mentoring Prize will be announced on Saturday afternoon at the Education section award ceremony. So no spoilers here ;-)

Immediately after there was a small but buzzing education and career fair, with institutions showcasing postgraduate programmes from as far afield as McGill University in Montreal and Kyushu University in Japan. It was great a number of budding design engineers, including several who'd made the trip from the UK.

After some sweltering days, a welcome drop of rain rolled in, though it did nothing to dampen the mood. Spirits were particularly high among a group of DTU students we met with who were celebrating completing their Masters a few hours earlier.

We rounded off the day attending the student social alongside our co-sponsors Genelec, enjoying a boat tour around the waterways taking in the city sights including the iconic Opera building before landing and savoring the super street food and 'beach' bars at Reffen.

Day 1 at the Audio Engineering Society European Convention in Copenhagen - at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet - DTU.

The stunning DTU campus made for a brilliant backdrop to a vibrant opening day at the AES European Convention in Copenhagen.

We kicked things off with an insightful session from the AES leadership board, covering how the society balances education, research and industry interests - and the wealth of opportunities available for students, academics and business professionals to get involved and help shape the future of the world's largest and most influential global audio engineering society.

From there, it was great to reconnect with familiar faces from previous conventions and our friends from the AES Education section, and to spend time chatting with some of the exhibiting manufacturers, including recent newcomer to the immersive audio scene, spatial reference headphone maker Areal Technologies from Belgium and the team from established high-end California based headphone company Audeze.

The evening wrapped up nicely with a quick stop at the end-of-day welcome reception before heading into the heart of Copenhagen's waterfront to Auro-3D and Dynaudio's hosted drinks and demos at Black Tornado Studios, rounded off with some great street food as the northern sun set on a truly enjoyable first day.

We’re heading to Audio Engineering Society Europe 2026 in Copenhagen this week! 🇩🇰

It's the first time AES Europe has returned to Copenhagen in over 30 years - in that time the convention has toured cities right across the continent, so it's great to be back. We're proud to once again be awarding our Go to Market Mentoring Prize at the Student Design Competition, taking place at midday on Friday 29th.

We'll also be taking part in the Education & Career Fair on Friday from 1:30–3:00pm, and we'd love to meet you there if you're attending and keen to discuss career opportunities in the industry. The fair takes place immediately after the Student Design Competition, in the same room, so if you're involved with the SDC, stick around, and maybe even find your dream job!

We're looking forward to connecting with institutes, postgraduates, graduates, and undergraduates across the audio world, as well as the wealth of technology companies that will be in Copenhagen.

And if you're joining us for the Student Social on Friday evening, we'll see you on the boat! We're delighted to be co-sponsoring the evening alongside Genelec.

Olympia London was buzzing yesterday for MPTS, which has firmly established itself in its west London home as an accessible, content-led event for the UK's media and broadcast technology and solution suppliers, drawing in content creators, production professionals and broadcasters alike.

Beyond the obvious crowds and impressive diversity of exhibitors, what really stood out was the rich diet of live content across 11 stages, all seemingly packed with attentive audiences and offering back-to-back agendas of panel sessions, training workshops and feature interviews throughout the day.

On the subject of diets, another highlight was the quality and variety of catering on site, with plenty of places to sit, catch our breath, talk and eat. Other popular industry events, please take note!

There was a plethora of small production tech on show for podcasters, alongside plenty of demonstrations of integrated workflows and AI-powered systems. We always enjoy hearing and seeing what's new on both the hardware and software side.

It was great to catch up with current and former clients, and to run into industry friends old and new. Thanks to everyone who took the time to stop and chat with our founder, Richard Wear. Clearly, there are challenges in today's market, but it's encouraging to hear businesses engaging with the questions and opportunities around talent and organisational development.

Yesterday, our Senior Recruitment Sourcer & Coordinator Connor Booth headed up to PLASA Focus Leeds, and he came back full of praise for the down-to-earth buzz on the show floor.

With the usual split two-building format and the compact booth sizes, exhibitors really had to put their best foot forward with their featured products and offerings. All killer, no filler, as Connor put it with his distinctive Kiwi twang. There was a real energy around the Royal Armouries with a steady stream of visitors and genuine excitement in the conversations happening across every stand.

Thanks to everyone who stopped with Connor for a chat. If you missed him this time around and want to talk about your next key hire in AV, audio, lighting, or event services, get in touch - [email protected]

Look at them now.

Some placements you remember for the moment itself. Others you remember for what happens in the years that follow. This one we definitely remember for both.

Back in 2018, we were approached by the CEO of an established European communication solutions business. They were looking for a Chief Strategy Officer to join one of their divisions, and it became one of the more rigorous and interesting senior searches we'd run at Interfacio for a while. We looked at the immediate secure communications sector as well as across the wider adjacent related technology fields, including video and surveillance, and access control. Careful market mapping, thorough sourcing, a lot of honest conversations about culture fit as well as how the business was evolving, what the business actually needed, and the kind of leader who could take the division into its next chapter.

Almost as soon as our candidate joined, the business reorganised, and he was appointed to the role of CEO for one of two newly created global divisions. Seven years on, he is still there, having successfully built and expanded his business unit and organisation. Still shaping the strategy, still building the team, leading strategic acquisitions that have redefined what the division looks like today, and strengthening the business's global market position and competitive position.

What has stayed with us isn't just the progression, although that speaks for itself. It is the relationship that followed. We have since supported this individual and our client on a number of subsequent key appointments in R&D engineering, regional sales, and senior business leadership in France, Czechia, the UK, and Italy. All part of the initial strategy for growth and stemming from that successful key hire.

That, for us, is what a good senior hire looks like. Not the person you place on the day they sign, but the person who is still there years later, quietly compounding the value of that original decision.

06/05/2026

April has been a month of contrasts across audio, AV, broadcast and live events.

As the industry moves deeper into a packed spring season, with festival builds ramping up, major trade shows drawing global crowds, and innovation cycles accelerating, we've seen both bold leaps forward and moments of reflection.

Our lead story captures that spirit: NASA's 32-camera, 8K capture rig for Artemis II is redefining how audiences will experience space missions. At the same time, we pause to acknowledge the loss of two true industry pioneers, Tom Menrath and Lyndon Laney, whose contributions have left a lasting mark on the MI and pro audio worlds.
