We're excited to be heading back to Olympia London for PLASA this weekend.

This year's seminar programme looks great, with sessions from the audio team behind Eurovision 2026, the tech secrets behind The Traitors' live experience, and Celestial's record-breaking drone shows.

There's also a strong thread running through this year's event on skills, training and the next generation entering the industry, with hands-on ChamSys training sessions and input from organisations like Bectu, The ALPD and Women In Lighting. Well worth a look if you're early in your career or thinking about breaking into the industry.

Richard will be there, catching up with existing clients, industry friends and making new connections. If you're going to be there and want to get our take on a current recruiting challenge, or if you just fancy a coffee, a catch-up or a chat, drop us a line at [email protected] or DM Richard directly.

See you at Olympia.

Hire wrong, and you'll pay for it long after they've gone. In more ways than one.

It's hard to see which way is up in business right now. But whether you're growing, or working hard just to stand still, you still need the best people delivering against clear plans and adding real value.

The financial cost is the easy part to measure. The real damage shows up in disruption, in customers and investors who notice, in a team whose morale takes the hit. But cost is usually the first thing businesses think about when hiring, so the proper steps get skipped. It gets delegated, rushed or done without ever really testing whether the best-looking candidate can actually do the job.

And AI hasn't changed that equation. It makes sourcing and screening faster, but on its own it doesn't produce better hiring decisions, only more (and better-looking) data.

At Interfacio, we work with businesses across AV, broadcast, music and entertainment technology. If you're weighing up speed against process on a senior hire, or want a second opinion on whether your criteria are properly defined before you go to market, we'd welcome the conversation.

Three job titles, eight years and one company. That's the shorthand version of this story, but the interesting part sits underneath it.

In 2018, we were asked to find a specialised Global Marketing Manager to focus on public sector projects for a leading global audio technology business. Our client was keen that we didn't limit the search to people already working in AV. They wanted proven technology marketing leadership experience and skills, honed in a demanding blue-chip enterprise sector, believing that a strong professional marketing toolkit was more valuable than the short-term appeal of knowledge of their customers and products. We agreed with them, and were very happy to direct our research and market mapping beyond the usual AV industry boundaries.

The geographic scope of the search was wide, and the hiring team that we worked with was open-minded. The successful candidate that we found and pitched the role to was running global cybersecurity marketing and communications inside a major IT services firm in France. She joined, and the fit was immediate.

By 2022, she'd been promoted to Senior Global Marketing Director. This year, she stepped up again to Associate Vice President of Global Growth Marketing, now sitting inside the senior leadership of the business.

None of that happened because the candidate was an obvious fit, applied for the role or even knew the company. It happened because the business thought carefully about the quality and skills they really wanted, and worked openly and constructively with us as we explored people and sectors beyond the obvious industry comfort zones. Performance and progression followed and they kept backing her as the business continued to develop and grow.

Andy Burnham didn't win a leadership contest. He won by making sure there wasn't one.

Keir Starmer resigned as UK PM on 22 June 2026, two years after leading Labour to a general election win. Burnham, who'd been outside Parliament since 2017, forced a by-election in Makerfield, won it on 18 June, and was back in the Commons within days. By the time nominations closed on 16 July, he had 369 MPs behind him. No rival had enough support left to stand. A coronation, not a contest.

It's a useful case study for anyone who appoints senior people for their own business. Our latest article looks at what it teaches us about selection: why uncontested appointments deserve more scrutiny, the trade-off between speed and legitimacy, and why the strongest candidates are often a step removed from being considered at all.

New Role: Product Manager, Commercial AV Products - Belgium

Our client is an established and well-regarded manufacturer in the professional AV sector, known for the quality and reliability of its products. As the business continues to develop, it is investing in a more structured approach to how it defines and shapes its products, and is now looking for a Product Manager to lead that effort.

📍 Location: Limburg, Belgium (on-site, min. 4 days/week)
💡 Industry: Commercial AV Products
🌍 Limberg region of Belgium (relocation assistance available)

You will translate customer needs, market insight and product vision into clear requirements that engineering can execute against, bringing structure to a cross-functional environment and coordinating stakeholders across sales, marketing, engineering, manufacturing and finance. There is a clear path for the role to broaden into a more senior product leadership position over time.

We are open to a range of backgrounds, including Product Management, Applications Engineering, Technical Sales, Systems Engineering, and R&D. Strong technical credibility, structured thinking and good judgement are key. Fluency in English is essential and additional languages are a bonus.

Now Placed: A Digital Marketing Manager role in Florida, USA is now filled.

Our client, a global leader in entertainment and architectural lighting products, was looking for an experienced Digital Marketing professional with a strong background in demand generation across B2B and B2B2C environments, including hands-on expertise in HubSpot to drive campaigns, workflows and reporting.

We've worked with this client on successful recruitment projects for over 10 years, and this placement came with a nice twist: the hiring manager was themselves placed into a senior business management role with the client earlier this year, a positive candidate experience leading straight into a successful new collaboration.

Great roles. Great talent. Delivered.

Also in our June digest: the AV sector just came back from InfoComm having stopped talking about AI and started building with it, a US ruling just reopened the fight over foreign talent that recruiters thought was settled, and a £1.6bn deal is about to fold ITV into Sky. Oh, and under-31s now make up just 31% of the events workforce - worth asking who's running your shows in ten years.

June has been a month lived largely outdoors, and not always comfortably, as a heatwave swept across much of the UK and Europe just as the industry got back to business after InfoComm Las Vegas. With teams returned from the show floor and back to project delivery, attention has quickly turned to the...
