Since joining Cairn Cross a couple of years ago, Harry has consistently demonstrated an exceptional work ethic, a positive attitude, and a genuine commitment to learning and developing his skills. His willingness to take on new challenges, support his colleagues, and continue growing both personally and professionally has made him a valued member of the team.

Harry’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Last year, he was proudly named Apprentice of the Year at the CECA Yorkshire & Humber Awards, a fantastic achievement that recognised his hard work, determination, and the significant progress he has made during his apprenticeship journey.

🚧 Canton Wheel Lathe Project – Progress Update

We’re pleased to share a progress update on the Canton Wheel Lathe Project, in which Cairn Cross has been appointed as Principal Contractor for Transport for Wales.

Called upon to deliver this reactive project against challenging, time-critical deadlines, following the successful completion of the recently delivered Bogie Drop project at Canton, our team has drawn on extensive experience in complex rail infrastructure works to drive the project forward.

Works are progressing well, and we’re pleased with the positive momentum being achieved on site. This project will see the installation of a new, state-of-the-art wheel lathe, replacing the existing facility and providing enhanced support for wheelset maintenance while significantly improving fleet maintenance capabilities.

A key factor in the project's success to date has been the strong collaboration between all stakeholders. By working together, the project team has been able to drive efficiencies, overcome challenges, and remain focused on meeting the demanding programme requirements.

The scheme comprises a range of multifaceted civil, structural, mechanical and electrical works, all disciplines in which Cairn Cross has many years of specialist experience. This project also marks a significant milestone for our business, representing our 12th wheel lathe installation project, more than any other UK contractor.

Commenting on the progress, the Senior Programme Manager said:
“We are pleased with the positive progress being made on this project. The new facility will provide more support for wheelset maintenance and significantly improve our fleet maintenance capabilities.”

The new facility is expected to be operational in November 2026, with all works scheduled for completion by January 2027.

A big thank you to everyone involved in delivering the project so far. We look forward to continuing our collaborative approach with the wider project team as works progress towards completion.

🚆 Case Study Spotlight: Canton High Level Access Platforms

We're proud to showcase another successful project delivered by Cairn Cross at Transport for Wales' Canton Depot.

Our team successfully installed two pairs of High Level Access Platforms (HLAPs) within Road 2 of the train maintenance shed, providing safe, full-length roof access to Stadler FLIRT trains during maintenance operations.

* Two independent, double-sided 78-metre access platforms
* Safe access across the full train length
* Integrated power outlets for enhanced functionality
* Under-platform lighting to improve visibility and safety
* Increased operational efficiency for depot maintenance teams

This project demonstrates Cairn Cross's commitment to delivering innovative access solutions that improve both workplace safety and maintenance productivity across the rail sector.
