πŸš† New Project Case Study: Wigan Springs Depot Washdown Facility

We are pleased to showcase another successful project delivered by Cairn Cross for Network Rail, the design and delivery of a new automated underframe wash facility at Wigan Springs Depot for the MPV Sandite rolling stock fleet.

The project involved the construction of a modern washdown facility, incorporating civil engineering works, drainage infrastructure, mechanical and electrical installations, testing, and staff training.

The new facility was developed to replace outdated washing arrangements and provide a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible cleaning solution for Network Rail’s fleet. The works included advanced washdown technology, wastewater treatment systems, service roads, track realignment, and supporting infrastructure.

Delivered within a live rail environment, the project required careful planning and collaboration to minimise disruption to depot operations. The team also successfully managed complex challenges, including uncharted ground obstructions and the safe removal and disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM).

Key project achievements included:
βœ… Delivery of a pioneering automated undercarriage and side-wash facility
βœ… Improved health, safety, and environmental performance
βœ… Enhanced depot maintenance efficiency and operational capability
βœ… Successful delivery within programme requirements
βœ… Zero accidents across 24,750 man-hours worked

A huge well done to everyone involved in delivering this important project and supporting Network Rail’s continued commitment to safe, efficient, and sustainable rail operations.

A major milestone for rail maintenance in Wales!

We were proud to welcome the Welsh Deputy Minister Mark Hooper AS/MS to Canton Maintenance Depot, Cardiff, last week, for the official opening of the new bogie drop facility for Transport for Wales. The Deputy Minister officially marked the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

This was a complex and significant project for Cairn Cross. The state-of-the-art facility represents a major step forward in supporting the reliability and long-term performance of Transport for Wales’s modern FLIRT fleet. After 18 months of complex construction within a live operational depot environment, the bogie drop became fully operational last month, enhancing maintenance capabilities while ensuring depot operations continued uninterrupted throughout the project. We would like to thank everyone involved in making this project a success – from our dedicated teams on site to Transport for Wales, and all stakeholders who contributed to the delivery of this fantastic facility.

This investment strengthens the future of rail services across Wales and demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration, careful planning, and a shared commitment to excellence.

This collaborative and controlled approach was recognised and praised by Transport for Wales, reflecting the commitment, expertise and teamwork shown by everyone involved in delivering this flagship project.

CASE STUDY Canton Bogie Drop Facility, Cardiff

We're proud to showcase the successful delivery of the new bogie drop maintenance facility at Canton Depot, Cardiff, for Transport for Wales, a flagship project delivered as part of the Core Valley Lines transformation programme.

Designed to support the maintenance of Transport for Wales’s modern FLIRT fleet, the facility provides critical infrastructure that will help enhance reliability, resilience, and long-term operational performance across the Welsh rail network.

Delivering this project within a live operational depot environment brought significant challenges, requiring close coordination between Transport for Wales, Network Rail, Pullmans, and National Grid Electricity Distribution. Through proactive stakeholder management, detailed planning and adaptive programme delivery, the project team successfully maintained depot operations while progressing major construction works.

Some of the project's key achievements include:
βœ… 18 months of complex construction delivered in a live rail environment
βœ… 65,000 accident-free hours with zero injuries recorded throughout the project
βœ… Successful coordination of civil, structural, track, M&E and power infrastructure works
βœ… Future-proofed maintenance facilities to support the new FLIRT fleet
βœ… Programme management recognised and praised by Transport for Wales as an example of best practice

The completed facility now plays a vital role in supporting the long-term resilience and performance of rail services across Wales, demonstrating the power of collaboration, technical expertise, and strong project delivery.
