Putting a face to the name.

As Sports Labs’ Sales Coordinator, Thomas Stevenson is the key point of contact for testing and certification, working with clubs, facilities, institutions, private organisations and governing bodies.

As a big football and rugby fan, Tom is a proud Hibernian supporter and enjoys having his passion for sport closely aligned with his role. A particular highlight has been working alongside the English County FAs and The FA, building relationships and supporting their testing requirements.

Is your 3G pitch ready for the higher rainfall months ahead and are organic pitches more susceptible?

In our latest Field Notes, Sports Labs Managing Director Niall MacPhee explores why organic infilled 3G pitches can hold water and the drainage challenges that can follow.

As we head towards autumn and winter in the Northern Hemisphere, understanding water infiltration is particularly important. Poor drainage can leave surfaces waterlogged and can also increase their susceptibility to freezing, potentially putting pitches out of play when they're needed most.

Following a successful summer at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Scotstoun Stadium is already preparing for its next chapter.

Ahead of the Games, Sports Labs carried out inspections during the construction and installation of the new athletics track, helping prepare the venue for the athletics and para-athletics programme.

The existing 3G pitch played an equally important role, hosting the field events, including shot put, javelin and discus. With the Games now complete, work is already underway to replace the artificial surface ahead of the 2026/27 Glasgow Warriors season, with just 7–8 weeks before the first league fixture.

From assessment to delivery, Sports Labs' Philip Martin, was proud to support the refurbishment of the Longhoughton Community & Sports Centre 3G pitch.

Our Consultancy team carried out the initial condition assessment, managed the tender process, and provided project management and contract administration throughout construction. The project also included essential base improvements, ensuring a high-quality surface for years to come.

We're delighted to see the completed facility in use and even more pleased to hear the client is thrilled with the outcome. Projects like these help create better, more sustainable facilities for the communities they serve.

Designed in 2020, the Lightweight AAA (Field Marshal) was developed to provide a simpler, more portable alternative to the industry-standard Advanced Artificial Athlete (AAA), without compromising on data quality.

The Field Marshal delivers correlated measurements of:
- Shock Absorption
- Vertical / Peak Deformation
- Energy Restitution (Energy Returned)

Its correlation has been created and validated through thousands of drops alongside industry-recognised AAA devices across a wide range of sports surfaces.

The device has been showcased at several FIFA Round Robin events, with Sports Labs also organising and leading an independent Round Robin involving multiple Lightweight AAA and AAA devices. Following industry review, the Lightweight AAA was accepted into the NPS Quality Programme, making it the independently verified benchmark device for lightweight surface testing.

Beyond the hardware, the Field Marshal is supported by the Sports Labs Test Hub. Wireless Bluetooth connectivity enables full device control from both iOS and Android, with calculation and reporting of both the FIFA 2015 and FIFA 2024 test methods, giving stakeholders greater flexibility as industry standards continue to evolve.

Behind every one of those numbers is an early morning start, a long drive, another stadium, another conversation, and an unwavering commitment to getting it right.

Over the past 7 years, James Cox has completed testing on 1219 fields for more than 395 clients, helping clubs, governing bodies and facility owners better understand and improve their playing surfaces.

This milestone represents far more than the numbers. It reflects years of dedication, expertise, consistency and countless hours spent delivering trusted, independent sports surface testing across the UK.

Congratulations, James, on this achievement. Thank you for everything you've contributed to Sports Labs and to the industry. Here's to many more miles, many more fields, and many more milestones. 👏

Lewis McKenzie, Sports Labs Senior Field Technician, recently joined the team at Sports Labs Italy for goal post testing at Gammasport srl, just outside Venice. The visit marked our first time testing football goals for Gammasport, with assessments carried out on both a freestanding goal and a socketed goal.

A big thank you to the entire Gammasport team for their warm hospitality throughout the visit.
