"With the result of the upcoming Conservative leadership election due in the next few weeks, our report demonstrates a clear need for the new PM and Cabinet to make our industry a priority for a super-charged post-Brexit trade policy.

"The opportunity on offer is enormous. Rising populations in some parts of the world has caused cities to expand exponentially, requiring more and better infrastructure from road and rail, to housing and office space, increasing the need for construction services."

Today, The Global Britain Commission has launched it's second report, 'Global Britain: Where Next?', which includes a new index examining the best targets for future export growth for the UK.

Our CEO for Consult, Jason Millett has written for Building Magazine about the huge potential for the UK's built environment sector to be a huge driver for export growth for the UK economy - and how Government and industry needs to work together to make that a reality.

One Team. One Crown Place.

We’re delighted to announce that Mace have been named as ‘Tall Building Contractor of the Year’ at the Tall Building Awards 2022, for the project: One Crown Place.

Working as the main design and build contractor, we delivered One Crown Place as a BREEAM Excellent rated project. Using modern methods of construction and latest technology, we redefined the boundaries of delivery.

Composed of concrete and glass with deep steel trusses at the base, the façade of the adjacent 28- and 34-storey towers is made up of glazed terracotta.

The development has a total of 246 private apartments, a fully restored Georgian terrace - transformed into a 41-room luxury boutique hotel, and 140,000 sq ft of premium office space.

Huge congratulations to Mace's Muyiwa Oki, who has been named the next president-elect of the RIBA after a hard-fought campaign.

Muyiwa's appointment makes him the first black president-elect of the RIBA, as well as the youngest ever at 31 years old.

Muyiwa's fiercely independent campaign has received support from numerous high-profile figures in the architecture industry, as well as being driven by grassroots support from across the profession.

While Muyiwa's campaign is, of course, independent to his role at Mace, we couldn't be prouder of his achievement. Muyiwa’s impact on the architecture industry could be transformational and we can’t wait to see his campaign goals turning into action during his tenure with the RIBA.

Well done Muyiwa!

Featuring on the front cover of Building Magazine’s July 2022 issue, our CEO for Construct, Gareth Lewis, spoke with Dave Rogers on rebuilding Battersea Power Station, beating inflation, and how he can see a brighter future for our industry.

After an incredible five years, Mace’s work on the second phase of Battersea is coming to an end. With 253 apartments, over 100 retail units and a new headquarters for Apple, Battersea Power Station is the largest project we’ve delivered in London.

“I’ve loved it, we’ve had a fantastic team at Battersea, the architect (WilkinsonEyre) has been great. The client has been brilliant.”

What sits at the heart of innovation strategy? Our people.

We recently launched our Ambition Fund, part of our revamped innovation strategy, which will put £1m or more per year towards trialling, testing and accelerating the adoption of new products and solutions.

Matt Gough, our Director of Innovation, speaks to PlaceTech about how we rally our colleagues around innovation.

“The fund is really about allowing people to ideate and to be a bit more creative – to catalyse ideas.”

The Government’s Levelling-Up White Paper is due to be published today. It promises an improvement to the distribution of community investment, but it can only be a success if the whole country benefits from its policies.

Commenting in Property Week today, our CEO for Consult, Jason Millett, said:

“The paper prioritises urban development on Brownfield Land, such as through the £1.5bn Brownfield Fund available from April 2022. Regenerating derelict areas is great news to improve blighted neighbourhoods, but it’s essential that retrofitting older properties is funded as part of Levelling Up.

“Sustainability must be front and centre for the government to meet its 2050 net zero commitments. With 80% of building stock by 2050 already built, failing to reduce the emissions from these buildings could further disadvantage local communities.”

68% of global business leaders think the property and construction industry has made more progress in carbon reduction in the past year than ever before.

Mark Reynolds, our Group CEO, recently discussed Mace’s Carbon Survey 2021 and what the findings tell us about construction achieving net zero carbon, in Building Magazine.

“We might just have a movement on our hands that will finally see our industry come together to tackle the biggest challenge of our time", says Mark.

“The government must step in to reform the 20 per cent VAT tax on refurbishments to encourage more sustainable practices.”

Speaking at the Construction News Summit last week, Mace’s Group CEO, Mark Reynolds, called for the Government to introduce a VAT cut for refurbishing buildings, as a solution to help reduce carbon emissions and level-up the country post-pandemic.

Mark’s thoughts were echoed by other industry CEOs, who agreed on the need to rethink the industry’s attitude and approach towards net zero carbon.
