I've a story to tell you about the "fear of getting it wrong". Please read below.
When their daughter was born, they stayed awake most nights watching her breathe. Not because something was wrong, but because they were afraid of getting something wrong. The mother would hold the baby carefully and whisper, “Do you think we’re doing this right?” The father, just as unsure, would smile softly and say, “I hope so.”
That question followed them through every stage of parenthood. During the first fever, the first day of school, and the nights their daughter cried and they could not figure out why. They asked it after difficult decisions, after moments they felt too strict, and even after moments they felt too soft. “Are we doing it right?” became part of their everyday lives.
Sometimes they felt confident. Other times, they felt completely lost. But even in the uncertainty, they kept trying. They showed up every day with love, hoping it would be enough.
Years passed, and their little girl grew older. She became independent, kind, and strong. She built a life of her own, carrying pieces of her parents with her in ways she did not even realise.
Then one day, life began to change again. Her mother started forgetting small things; her father grew weaker with time. Slowly, the roles began to reverse. Now she was the one helping with medications, reminding them about appointments, and sitting beside them during long quiet evenings.
One night, after helping her mother into bed, she sat alone and sighed deeply. “I don’t know if I’m doing this right,” she whispered quietly to herself.
Her father looked at her for a moment before smiling gently. “We used to say the same thing about you.” And suddenly, she understood.
No one really moves through life completely certain. Not parents. Not caregivers. Not anyone trying to love another person well. We are all just trying our best with the knowledge, strength, and love we have in the moment.
The fear of getting it wrong will always find a way to speak to us. But love was never about perfection. It has always been about showing up, trying again, and caring deeply even when we are unsure. We're here for you as always. Download the Birdiebox app on Google Play Store and App Store today.
