The construction projects of photovoltaic installations are in great danger.

Rising prices for PV equipment have been on the rise in recent weeks. China's power restrictions are not expected to expire before the second quarter of 2022 and there is no possibility of panel prices falling on the horizon. The cost of photovoltaic system development has skyrocketed since the world began to emerge from the Covid-19 lockdowns, leaving project constructors with difficult choices. Norwegian business intelligence company Rystad Energy has predicted that rising panel costs combined with increased shipping costs could delay or cancel up to 56% of the photovoltaic capacity currently planned worldwide for next year.

With the average price of solar panels having increased from $ 0.20 per watt last year to $ 0.26 in July and going up and over $ 0.30 today, up to 50 GW from the 90 GW of solar capacity that has been planned for 2022 could be threatened by inflation. The panels together with the shipping cost usually correspond to one third of the capital cost of a photovoltaic project and both costs have skyrocketed due to the lack of shipping containers, which was exacerbated by the Covid crisis and of course rising prices for raw materials such as solar polysilicon, silver, copper, aluminum and glass. The price of polysilicon alone has almost quadrupled in recent months and shipping costs for solar panels have tripled, from $ 0.005 / Wp in September 2019, to $ 0.03 now.

With Rystad chief energy analyst David Dixon saying supply bottlenecks are unlikely to subside in 12 months, he estimates that the cost of photovoltaic work has risen 15% from the average as published. last year. This will result in photovoltaic manufacturers having the option of either reducing their profit margins, passing on costs in the form of more expensive project construction, or postponing or canceling their scheduled photovoltaic installations.
