Over Land and Sea. A Journey of Power to Sanday.
A journey from the British Hub of Transformer manufacture in Yorkshire, to an island that feels untouched. Sanday is only 16 miles in length and sets the scene of a challenge to mobilise electrical equipment and lifting plant, as well as personnel (ferry v weather).
Preplanning and assurance completed from the first visit, the operational delivery involved transport from Leeds to Scrabster and from there, sea legs to Kirkwall and Sanday Island (3rd Largest of the Orkney Islands).
With the support from Heddle Construction Limited and A. P. HOLLINGWORTH LIMITED, MAC Projects were able to manage and deliver this project from start to finish.
“It was a challenge from the start; it was planned in high detail with contingencies in place should the weather prohibit any aspect of our plan. For example, the same ferry couldn’t accept the crane and the semi-trailer that transported the transformer from Leeds.
As such we had to utilise alternative roro ferries and make final advances when the weather looked favourable. This was the same when leaving the Island.
I am pleased to say that all went well, and we had the weather on our side. Another project we were proud to be involved with. Assisting Winder Power in crossing a part of the Atlantic, and help provide continued energy to the 500 residents of Sanday Island’
