FOLD HOUSE is a little alteration to a Victorian terraced house in Kentish Town. Leaning into the garden, I think it sits more like a potting shed than a contemporary extension, with the clay-coloured zinc roof and the oak of the doors and windows softening the corner of the house. I think it brings a character to the site that is as much a part of the garden as it is a part of the house.

Ty Gwyllt is a writer’s shed set in a clearing in the trees on a Welsh hillside, positioned to enjoy long views down through the valleys.

We adapted a Victorian terraced house to strike a balance for family living: giving opportunities to be together and opportunities to be apart.

UNSQUARE HOUSE is organised around an open, naturally lit living room, with a series of smaller nooks and perches set around it. A curving wall conceals utility and cloakroom spaces, while an oak screen to the staircase—incorporating a concealed door and a small diamond porthole—provides acoustic separation between the entertaining spaces and the children’s bedrooms above.

As well as introducing a number of positions to enjoy the garden, the project created a space which is liveable, flexible and inviting.

MANSIO

Shortlisted for the Small Projects Prize, this mobile artist’s studio is a deployable structure designed to travel between sites of Roman ruin along Hadrian’s Wall. Our competition winning entry provided accommodation for artists invited to enjoy a residency as a part of the Hexham Book Festival.

Taking its name from the teahouses constructed as meeting places along Roman roads, the Mansio is our collaboration with artists and architects Kieran Wardle and Matthew Butcher. The unusual translucent forms of the pavilion give a ghostly presence in the ruined settings along the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Comprised of a white steel frame clad in panels of translucent polycarbonate, it features a chimney stack that illuminates like a beacon when in use, and a set of fin-like shutters that open and close to generate various levels of enclosure to facilitate different uses and moods.

A public building in miniature, THE HOUSING CENTRE provides a welcoming setting for tenants to drop in, desk space for permanent staff and a loose-fit space to host larger community gatherings.

Responding to its context and stakeholders, the building projects itself quietly to support the role the Stroud Green Housing Cooperative plays in the community.

UNSQUARE HOUSE

We’ve created a sociable living space for a young family in Hackney from a compromised basement deprived of light.

Heavily compartmentalised into small spaces, key utility, WC, building services and a kitchen separated the interior of the building from the garden, and created a sense of enclosure that made gathering impossible.

Our proposal was to rearrange these essential functions behind a curving white partition that runs from the front to the back of the house, each accessible through concealed doors served from a new living area with views into the garden.

We introduced a number of adaptable elements to the back of the building which allow all of the family to use the space simultaneously for their own needs. A frameless glazed corner serves a window seat allowing you to enjoy views of the garden whilst reading; a narrow window element to let the cat out; a large pivot door to open up the connection between inside and outside; and a slim timber panel you can pop open to ventilate the space when a full house makes it feel humid.

This project is an adaptable, open space that frames views of the garden and creates a liveable, dynamic home.

Jealous House is a set of alterations and extensions that fold around the corner plot of a 1990s self build in Kennington.

Our Client wanted to create a series of spaces that were open, shared a relationship with the garden, but had a sense of being delineated from each other without being partitioned.

The concrete lintel over the openings serves to lead the eye around the building, unifying spaces around corners and into inner pockets.

A public building in miniature, the Housing Centre provides a welcoming setting for tenants to drop in, desk space for permanent staff and a place to host annual general meetings of the residents it segues.

Responding to its context and community, the building projects itself quietly to support the role the Stroud Green Housing Cooperative plays in the community.

A butter yellow kitchenette sits under the scooping roof of the Housing Centre, helping mark the transition between the double-height clerestory space in the office area down to a more comfortable and welcoming scale for the supporting spaces. The building is at its lowest at the rear to minimise its impact on neighbouring gardens.

A wall of hidden storage behind reeded doors separates the front public spaces from the services behind.

A pistachio green floor in a hardwearing vinyl runs through to the spaces behind, and is complemented by the inviting yellow glow which contrasts with the cooler, minimal white of the main office.
