The richest men in Rome paid artists to make their floors look permanently filthy.
It was called the asarotos oikos, the “unswept floor”. A mosaic of scattered bones, fish, fruit and a little mouse gnawing a walnut, laid in marble so the wreckage of a banquet would last forever. Pliny the Elder credited the trick to a mosaicist named Sosus. You can still stand over one in the Vatican today.
The joke was on the staff. Behind every gleaming marble hall was someone on their knees with a brush, scrubbing the real floor by hand through the night so it shone by morning.
Two thousand years later the floor still has to be spotless by sunrise. The difference is the Kleenbot C40 now takes the night shift on its own. 🏛️
Rome had the marble. It just never had the robot.
