We continue our tour of World Cup host nations with the first geological map of Canada 🇨🇦

Sir William Logan was the founder of the Geological Survey of Canada. Towards the end of his career he created what was the first geological map of Canada, putting his knowledge into one final great work before he retired - 'Geological map of Canada and the adjacent regions including parts of other British provinces and of the United States'.

Published in 1866 at a scale of 1 inch to 25 miles and hand-coloured, it's a monumental work and a foundation for Canadian geology.

With the first match of the football World Cup kicking off in Mexico City tonight, here is an unusual map of Mexico from our collections 🇲🇽

Published in 1893, its full title in English is 'Map of the meteorites of Mexico or regions of the republic where meteoric irons and stones have fallen, formed under the auspices of the Secretariat of Development Antonio del Castillo.'

Antonio del Castillo Patiño (1820-1893) was a Mexican mining engineer and geologist, credited with developing the study and practice of geology in the country. He was the first director of the National Geological Institute.

As the map shows, meteorite discoveries were wide-spread in Mexico. Writing in 1890, Lazarus Fletcher, Keeper of Minerals in the British Museum, states that 'Mexico is remarkable beyond any other part of the earth's surface for the number and magnitude of the masses of meteoritic iron found within its borders.' (Mineralogical Magazine, Vol. IX, No. 42).

Be in with a chance of winning a copy of 'On Time and Water: A History of our Future', plus a cinema poster signed by writer Andri Snær Magnason and director Sara Dosa. 🎬📖

In her new documentary 'Time and Water', Sara Dosa carefully weaves together Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason's grandparents' fading memories with the receding of his country's glaciers. The result is a moving reflection on memory, time, and loss in an era of human-induced climate change.

To enter the giveaway, head to our Instagram. Full instructions on how to take part and conditions available at www.instagram.com/geolsoc/

'Time and Water' arrives in UK cinemas from 12 June. Read our editorial piece on the documentary on our website https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/news/time-and-water-reflecting-on-memory-loss-and-climate-change/
