Genomics England

Genomics England We’re working to enable faster and deeper genomic research, to bring genomic healthcare to all who need it.

Last week on Behind the Genes, we were joined by midwife Jess and her baby, who are participating in the Generation Study.

Our guests discussed the important role midwives play in supporting families, and how genomics is increasingly becoming part of maternity care and clinical practice.

Genes, Brains, and Breakthroughs, a new public awareness campaign from the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Oxford, is now live.

Developed with families, researchers, clinicians and advocacy organisations, the campaign features a series of accessible animated videos exploring neurodevelopmental conditions, genetics and emerging therapeutic approaches.

Shaped by the experiences and questions of parents and carers, the resources aim to improve understanding, support families, and encourage more inclusive conversations around neurodevelopmental conditions.

The videos are now available on their YouTube account:

🧬 Educational animations about genetics, neurodevelopmental conditions, and emerging therapies. This 16-part series was co-created with families, researchers, and advocacy groups to make complex science accessible, clear, and hopeful. Topics include genetic variants, inheritance, genetic testing,...

How do approved researchers securely access data for research?

In this blog, we explore how the Airlock system helps protect participant data while enabling important genomics research.

Learn more about:
• What Airlock is and why it’s important
• How data is securely imported and exported in the Research Environment
• What safeguards are in place to protect participant privacy
• How secure data access supports research into rare conditions and cancer

Does participating in genomic research really make a difference?

In this clip from Behind the Genes, Participant Panel member Frances reflects on a moment that brought the real-world impact of research into sharp focus - connecting scientific discovery with the people it ultimately affects.

It’s a powerful reminder of why participant involvement matters, and how individual contributions can shape outcomes in ways we don’t always see.

Patient and participant voices are playing an increasingly important role in shaping genomic research but what does that look like in practice?

In our latest Behind the Genes episode, we mark 10 years of the Participant Panel and hear directly from the people involved. From influencing research design and data use to contributing to policy discussions, the Panel helps ensure lived experience is embedded from the very beginning.

This episode explores not only the impact of the Panel’s work over the past decade, but also the personal experiences behind it and what meaningful involvement really looks like.
