The Power of Full-Surface Temperature Mapping of Turbocharger components.

How do you accurately measure temperatures across a turbocharger turbine wheel operating in demanding conditions?

In 2024, SCS collaborated with Garrett - Advancing Motion and demonstrated how Thermal History Coatings (THCs) generated high-resolution (1โ€“2 mm) surface temperature maps across turbocharger turbine wheels following engine testing.

The study showed that THC-derived temperature profiles reflected the operating conditions of each test, with the hottest temperatures occurring at the blade leading edges and reducing towards the hub. Initial comparisons with Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) simulations were also promising, with the majority of measurement points on one turbine wheel differing by less than 10ยฐC from the predicted temperatures.

The research concluded that Thermal History Coating technology successfully profiled temperatures on turbocharger turbine wheels and highlighted its potential for future turbocharger development, including E-Turbo applications and other difficult-to-access components.

Revealing the Thermal Behaviour of Turbocharger Bearing Assemblies.

Accurate temperature data is essential for optimising turbocharger performance, reliability and durability. Yet capturing detailed thermal distributions across bearing cartridge assemblies has traditionally been challenging.

In the ASME Turbo Expo 2024 paper GT2024-126715, Sensor Coating Systems (SCS), together with MinebeaMitsumi Europe and IHI Charging Systems International GmbH, demonstrated how Thermal History Paints (THPs) can provide high-resolution temperature maps across turbocharger bearing cartridge assemblies.

Four bearing cartridges were subjected to four severe gas-stand test conditions, including a heat-soak test without water cooling. Following testing, the THPs were optically analysed to reveal the maximum temperatures experienced across each component surface.

With 1 mm measurement spacing, the technique delivered detailed thermal maps across the inner and outer bearing rings, providing valuable insight into the thermal behaviour of the assemblies.

This work demonstrates how high-resolution thermal mapping can provide engineers with the detailed temperature data needed to validate designs, understand thermal behaviour and optimise turbocharger performance.

Thermal History Paints transforming the lifetime management of critical gas turbine components

Another of Sensor Coating Systems' ASME Turbo Expo technical papers explored exactly that.

Developed in collaboration with EPRI, this research demonstrated that Thermal History Paints (THP) can deliver high-resolution temperature maps after up to 7,200 hours of exposure at temperatures up to 450ยฐC.

The study showed that THP offers the durability needed for long-term monitoring of critical components such as industrial gas turbine rotor discs. It also found that the effects of time can be neglected over these long exposures, simplifying calibration and enabling practical implementation.

The result? A viable new approach to capturing temperature information that has not previously been possible to acquire, providing engineers with valuable insight to support run, repair and replace decisions, while helping reduce life cycle costs.

ASME Turbo Expo Research: Validating Thermal History Coatings

As power generation systems continue to push for higher efficiency, accurate thermal mapping plays an increasingly important role in design validation.

Presented at ASME Turbo Expo 2023, this collaborative research between Sensor Coating Systems and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. compared Thermal History Coatings (THCs) with thermocouples, Uniform Crystal Temperature Sensors (UCTS) and pyrometry on two stage-one turbine blades on a Kawasaki gas turbine engine test.

Temperature data obtained from the different temperature methods were compared qualitatively and quantitatively. Measurement data were also compared with the Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) model for the particular internal cooling design of these blades. Further, the application of the THC on two identical blades allowed a direct comparison of component-to-component variations and indicated excellent repeatability of the THC data.
