Developing the junctions for the veranda took some doing. How to make the transition simply and confidently without resorting to a skirt?

The answer came in taking one end past the other, creating a liminal meeting of places that allowed for a terrace at 1F level whilst welcoming those walking up with an open gable.

The 1:20 model we built made a big difference in us working out the structure and the look of the transition and in the inspiration of house at Mols Hills.

From the initial concept sketch to the first developmental step, the project was very much that welcoming enclosure and cover.

The initial thought for the ‘front’ extension was that of a lighthouse - a beacon of safety and warmth in the sea of surrounding green fields.

Introducing Bureau of Works — a new sister company to Alexander Hills Architects, set up to build thoughtful, well-crafted projects with the same care that goes into their design.

will act as contractor and Principal Contractor on selected projects, helping bring architecture, making and construction closer together.

The aim is simple: better control over detail, cost, programme and quality — with a more fluid relationship between design and site.

Our focus includes:
• Residential refurbishments
• Extensions and alterations
• Bespoke interiors
• Small commercial fit-outs
• Conservation and sensitive repair
• Joinery, furniture and crafted details
• Low-carbon and natural material construction
• Design-led construction management

Bureau of Works exists to support projects where careful making matters — where the conversation between architect, client, builder and material can stay alive throughout the process.

Isn’t it great when things turn out?

From sketches showing a desire to see more expressed timber structure (creating more covered space) to the final thing, we are nearly finished with our renovation and extension of a detached farmhouse in North Norfolk.

The new roofline, with the mono-pitched roofs of the extensions, expand the existing silhouette of the house into a homestead - a collection of supporting masses that give the farmhouse a new centre of gravity.

We have recently bid for an exciting new project in Camden Town, the refit of a homelss outreach hub, which has got us thinking.

The hub offers support to those living on the streets with a wide spectrum of issues and requirments ranging from mental health, economic woes, personal bad luck, substance addiction, and domestic abuse. Each issue have their own requirements and genesis, many of which are incompatible with others, requiring distinction from other users, while some issues are the consequence of others.

How are these services delivered? There’s a clear functional specification of the space and facilities that each person requires but that is too simplistic an appraisal, ignoring the emotional and mental motivations that are present in all.

Alongside these personal guides is the wider societal view: how do we, as a society, want to care for those who need it, and what is the manner of that care? It might seem like an abstract extravagence when considering the base functions urgently needed but the dignity shown (or not) to people is a subtle motivator that either strengthens personal confidence or removes it.

The range of emotions that the staff at the hub have to go through on a regular basis - along with all the actions that these emotions lead to from the sad to the violent - is startling. The compassion shown in the face of bright anger is worthy of award.

We are very much looking forward to progressing. Watch this space.

LOGPILE is a speculative landscape intervention that links an ancient behavioural moment with a modern ecological one.

Neither art nor architecture, it is, at its core, the collection of timber for a purpose. Before architecture, the logpile gathered together material, labour, warmth, shelter and thought for a shared existential need. It marked a direct relationship between people and land — between the living tree and its transformation into human material.

Industrialisation has extended comfort, exchange and quality of life, but it has also hidden the ecological costs of those systems. Energy is distant. Materials arrive without memory. Extraction is displaced.

LOGPILE returns to the pile as a point of focus: a landscape intervention that pulls together the totem, ritual, cosmological tool, and terrestial instrument. It asks whether this early act of collection might suggest another direction — one in which material, energy, landscape and social life are more explicitedly bonded.

Model study in timber.
