How hot is Sweden right now? Paul was in Stockholm last month and had the pleasure of having Swedish Mobility expert Johanna Lennartson on the podcast to celebrate a booming region.

They covered a lot of lessons about running Mobility companies, but in particular, what do you do when the immigration rules haven’t changed… but the way they’re being applied suddenly has?

A classic challenge for all of us out there.

Thankfully, Johanna is the owner and Managing Director of Nimmersion and President of EuRA, with almost 20 years of experience across immigration and relocation - the perfect person to help answer challenging questions.

She’s also had a pretty incredible career journey - joining Nimmersion in an admin role in 2007, working across almost every part of the business and eventually buying the company.
We got into some really interesting areas:

• Why changes in immigration enforcement can be harder to manage than changes in legislation
• What happens when Mobility teams discover a new approach halfway through a live case
• How you stop valuable edge-case knowledge sitting in one person’s head
• Why Stockholm remains such a difficult housing market for relocating families
• How Sweden’s international talent population has changed with the growth of its tech sector

One thing that really stuck with me: formal rule changes are actually the easier bit. You can read them, communicate them and prepare.

It’s the changes you don’t know are coming that create the real challenge.

Thanks for joining me and sharing so openly, Johanna!

600 Trustpilot reviews. Average rating: 5 stars.

CEO Paul still remembes the first move we ever supported at PerchPeek. Everything was manual, complicated and unknown. And yet, even back then, there was a hint that human experts + streamlined tech could be a powerful combination for our space.
Six years and 600 reviews later, we’re well on our way to becoming one of the most loved brands in Mobility.
https://www.trustpilot.com/review/perchpeek.com

In an industry famed for negative experiences, that love is something Paul thinks about every single day. Still the single biggest motivator for Paul as the Perchy hype man.

We’re not getting people to Mars (yet 😉) – but in our own small way, it’s awesome to see the impact we can have on someone during one of the most critical phases of their life. And it’s a nice nod to the original bet: one place for your whole move, wherever in the world you’re going.

Long way to go. But what a Friday win.

Thank you to the Perchies who work tirelessly to make it happen, to our clients for trusting us, and to all the fabulous employees out there building their lives as global citizens.

You rock. 🦜

PerchPeek just hit its 600+ five-star trustpilot reviews. calm flex 💅🏾.

proof that our team really does put its money where its mouth is - not just when i’m mc’ing parrot basketball (a skill ai still can't replace😏).

all jokes aside, we’re very serious about relocation.

because done right, relocation means less admin and vendor wrangling, smoother moves, happier employees and one less headache when hiring and growing globally.

per usual, the flock understood the assignment 🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜

Close to 200 moves. Around five policy exceptions in six years.

That's an unusually good stat in Global Mobility - trust me.

On the latest PerchPeek Pod, I sat down with Dianne Couto Foutz, MBA, GMS-T, CRP from Pegasystems to understand how she got to this blissful state.

What I liked most about Dianne's approach is that she didn't start by asking what a “best practice” Mobility policy should look like.

When she was asked to revamp the programme, she and two interns went back through historic assignment letters to understand what people had actually received - and then looked at what happened afterwards.

Did supposedly short-term assignments actually end?
Did people return?
Did they stay?
Did their careers progress?

And where packages differed, was that because the business genuinely needed something different - or simply because one employee had negotiated harder than another?

That analysis surfaced some pretty fundamental things.

Some “short-term assignments” were effectively permanent moves, creating downstream immigration and tax problems.

Employees who genuinely returned from assignments were often seeing their careers accelerate.

And package variation was sometimes being driven by negotiating ability rather than a consistent philosophy.

The result was a much more structured programme that has now supported close to 200 moves with only around five exceptions.

We also got into:
- Why Dianne used Maslow's hierarchy of needs to structure Mobility benefits
- Her “rule of three” for deciding when an exception should become policy
- How she makes a lump-sum model work without putting everything into the lump sum
- Why the six-month analysis she did in 2020 could potentially take weeks with AI today

A really practical conversation about using evidence to build policy rather than relying on assumptions.

Thanks for sharing so openly, Dianne!

US immigration is moving ridiculously fast right now - even by US immigration standards!

Weighted H-1B lotteries. $100k fees. Court challenges. Falling application numbers. And now another proposal that could put a $103,625 fee on H-1B cap cases.

And the hard bit for employers is that you can’t just sit around waiting for everything to settle.

You’ve still got people to hire. Employees asking what happens to them. H-1B planning coming up. And potentially some very expensive decisions to take in the near future.

So this week on PerchPeek Pods, Paul sat down with Steven Williams, Principal Attorney at Silberman Law, to work through what’s actually changing and, more importantly, what employers should be doing about it.

They got into:

- Why higher-paid H-1B candidates are suddenly seeing much better lottery odds
- Why some companies are looking at Texas vs the Bay Area as an immigration decision
- What all of this means for grads and early-career international talent
- Whether “parking” employees outside the US and bringing them back on an L-1 is becoming a more serious strategy
- What happens to H-1B demand if a $103,625 fee actually comes in
- How to work out your H-1B exposure and plan for multiple scenarios before next year’s cycle

That last point was probably Paul's biggest takeaway.

Really timely one this week - huge thanks to Steven for coming on!

Naturally we post a lot about winning here at PerchPeek. We love it.

However, we recently lost a deal we’d spend 26 months on. This one cut super deep.

Our champion had said we were the chosen partner. All the stars seemed aligned. Genuinely we had no idea what happened.

Graciously, our champion agreed to give us a 30 minute debrief. Two questions in and the hammer dropped, we were perceived as being 4x the price.

CEO Paul considers this as 100% his fault - we’d agreed months ago to simplify our pricing structure and for whatever reason ended up sharing legacy tiers with this client. As so often is the case in Mobility, it’s hard for procurement teams to compare apples to apples and we made that even worse for them. Thy took our most expensive tier to compare against (our fault) and the rest as they say is history.

So many lessons for us, but the biggest one is about running towards danger. When the going is good it's so easy to leave the awkward thing alone and hope it doesn't come back to bite you. But so often it does.

These debrief conversations can be so painful but also the conversations I learn the most as a Founder (even if I'm a competitive sod that can't take losing!)

The right Global Mobility programme depends enormously on the business you’re building it for.

At a 70-person startup, you can build from scratch, stay close to every move and adapt quickly.

In a 50-year-old global business, the challenge can be almost the opposite. Relocation is already happening, different locations have developed their own ways of doing things, and creating consistency means understanding what works before changing it.

Few people have experienced both challenges as directly as Zinnia Brasa Trancón, Global Mobility Manager at Arthrex.

On the latest PerchPeek Pod, Zinnia joins Paul Bennett to share what she’s learned from designing and managing mobility programmes across very different organisations.

They get into:
→ Helping employees choose benefits they’ll actually need
→ Making the case for relocation services over cash
→ Offering flexibility without losing control of costs
→ Getting recruiters behind a new relocation approach
→ Creating consistency across locations with established ways of working

A really practical conversation on what making Mobility work looks like at very different scales.
