Three oak lattice gridshells for British Land at Regentās Place, designed by
developed the design from concept geometry through to fabrication and installation, translating complex surface geometry into a buildable timber structure.
Each pavilion comprises four spiralling layers of glue-laminated oak laths, 423 pieces in total, each curving and twisting along its length.
At Stage 3, principal curvature analysis mapped the minimum and maximum bend radii across each target surface. The governing radius of approximately 2.5m informed the lamination strategy: five 8mm oak lamellas laminated into a 65 Ć 40mm section, enabling the required curvature while keeping stresses within the materialās limits.
The laths were finger-jointed to lengths of up to 9.5m and laminated on bespoke fabrication jigs, with diamond-shaped connection blocks joining the layers to form each gridshell.
By resolving geometry, structural requirements and material behaviour at design stage, we established a direct route from architectural intent to fabrication and assembly š¤
