Society for Underwater Technology The Society for Underwater Technology is an International Learned Society for Marine Science & Technology.

We're multidisciplinary with members from offshore energy, diving, salvage, science, archaeology, leisure, education & defence sectors. SUT was founded to promote the further understanding of the underwater environment including diving and submersibles, environmental forces, marine policy, marine renewable energies, ocean resources, geotechnics, salvage, subsea engineering, underwater robotics, science and vehicles.

Join us on 9 September for one of SUT Aberdeen's most popular annual events, bringing together industry professionals to showcase new technologies, share technical insight, and explore the ideas shaping the future of the underwater sector.

🌍 Today is World Nature Conservation Day.

It's an opportunity to recognise the natural world that sustains us and reflect on our shared responsibility to protect it. For those working across the marine environment, it's also a reminder that the future of our ocean depends on the decisions we make today.

There is good reason for optimism. Around the world, governments, researchers, engineers, industry and coastal communities are working together to better understand and protect our seas. This year, a significant milestone was reached with more than 10% of the world's ocean now officially protected—an encouraging step towards the global ambition of protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030.

But there is still much to do. Expanding protected areas is only part of the challenge. Ensuring they are effectively managed, supported by robust science, and underpinned by innovation will be essential if we are to safeguard marine ecosystems while meeting society's growing need for sustainable energy, resources and infrastructure.

This is where the SUT community has an important role to play. Across our global network, our members are advancing the technologies, research and engineering that improve our understanding of the ocean and enable its responsible use. By bringing together expertise from across industry, academia and government, we're helping shape solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

On World Nature Conservation Day, we celebrate the progress made so far—and the people working every day to ensure our ocean remains healthy, resilient and sustainable for generations to come.

Applications for the 2026 Gwyn Griffiths Underwater Robotics Award (GGURA) are opening soon.

Presented by the SUT's International Panel on Underwater Robotics, the award recognises early- to mid-career professionals (under 40) who have made outstanding contributions to underwater robotics through industry, research or creative innovation.

As Professor Gwyn Griffiths MBE, Past President of the SUT, said:

"From my own career, I know that peer recognition of achievements through an international award can make a substantial and lasting difference... I am delighted to support the innovators of today and tomorrow."

The award reflects the SUT's commitment to recognising emerging talent and supporting the next generation of leaders developing the technologies that are transforming our understanding of the underwater world.
